  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Pipe Heat

Am trying to cope with heat issues from the exhaust on my new 2008 TE 450 (already burnt a hole in my Klim pants...). Ordered the two P3 guards and will install this wknd. Has anyone tried putting header wrap on under them?
Also read some posts on air boxes and other plastic out back getting melted - what's the best way to prevent? Header wrap or some kind of flashing?
Thanks!

I put header wrap on my whole exhaust- it kinda helps in those areas- but can still melt pants in those areas just a little slower: like 1.5 seconds slower( now its worn and I took it off and will run without any. There are some better guards out there that can better protect like the one from Motosportz or P3 sounds like you have the P3 ordered. On the 08's the exhaust comes closer to the airbox than on the 09-10s so yes they can melt. Many have put heat sheilding there or glued or rivited some aluminum to protect the affected area. Just know that that the more material you add to that area the closer you come to the pipe- so choose/ mod wisely.
Also- if you still have the Catalytic Converter ( inside stock 08 pipe) just know that that is a HUGE heat retainer.

Seems the bolts holding the heatshield on is what is burning my pants, not the pipe itself. I did rotate the heatshield so most of the shield is towards the rear of the bike.

I have header wrap double rolled on mine behind the stock crappy guard. The guard still gets hot enough to burn a bare leg (fooling around in shorts in the backyard), but not through my pants. I have the P3 front guard and love it. I need to get the rear.

Be careful with header wrap by the airbox. I did the header wrap on my 08' TE 510 , but i noticed after the fact that the wrap was too close. Had to patch the airbox. Still haven't purchased the guard. Dirt Bike had a picture that i believe was Ty Davis's bike with these nifty leg brackets that they said might go into production. Keep you planted and possibly a little farther from the leg burner. Just my 2 cents

The P3 stuff is all you need to protect your pants. Before I had both, I burned holes into several pair of pants multiple times. After I put on the P3 stuff, I never got another hole. I put header wrap on the mid-pipe area, which closed the gap between the pipe and airbox. Well after a muddy ride, mud and water completely closed the gap and transmitted heat to the airbox melting it. So I stopped using header wrap and the problem went away.

+1 for all the P3 products.. They do all the jobs as needed and then some. Header and boot guards are awesome for protection from dings and heat.. The skid plate is a fine work of art and still goes to show "USA" made products are the backbone of Americian pride..
