  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

My bike does not seem to get less mileage than before. Certainly not 20-30% as I would have noticed that. I rode the same area before and after and used almost exactly the same fuel even though I was on it harder after because it was more fun to snap that throttle.

I find my dead throttle happens mostly when running down hills with little to no throttle, then when I try to blip the throttle to bring the front wheel up over a small wash out I get the dead throttle. My thinking is its something to do with engine braking condition and my accidental rolling a small % of throttle before cracking the throttle quickly.

Very close to my experience. I can almost induce this dead throttle. It seems to happen a lot when running a steady speed, then I chop the throttle to load the front for a wheelie, snap it open and nothing. Bike runs fine, no pop, no odd sound, just nothing. Then roll the throttle on again and away it goes like nothing even happened. It never dies when this occurs or even shows signs of running bad at all it simply like I never twisted the throttle.

A good amount of people have this issue.

Not everyone has the dead throttle issue. I have never experienced it. Surely you don't suggest I do not have some magical throttle body do you?

He said "so many" and there is a lot. It is not like one or two but a good percentage and enough that it is not a isolated issue.

Took mine out late last night, didnt have a chance to fire it up or go for a ride yet. will have a report later. Currently equipped with fmf megabomb header, 4.1 silencer, and racemap 2.

Can't happen without a butterfly plate, ever.
As a mechanic, I know how hard it is to track intermittent faults that don't log codes.
It happened to my bike enough times that I was convinced the 2nd throttle was at fault. Has not happened again since removal of the butterfly.
The more hrs I do, the more it seems to be the case.

No, I don't believe in magic throttle bodies, but I also don't have an answer either (maybe only effects bikes within a range of VIN #????), only speculation, who knows, but the problem clearly exists and in my case, was there from new....
All I was trying to say is, if it is a faulty #2 tps, it would seems to be a high rate of failure, and if replacing it, how would I be sure not to get another faulty one?

Mine did it too. I didn't even realize what people were talking about when they said "dead throttle". I just thought there was something intermittently wrong with my bike. Haven't had it after BF removal. I'd imagine there are a very small percentage of 499/511 owners who've ever come to this site. And I'll bet most of them aren't that happy with how their bikes run. If you said, "have you had a dead throttle" they wouldn't even know what you mean. But they've had it, guaranteed!

Not so much a 'magic' fix, just if the shaft doesn't react, not having the butterfly there stops it affecting engine performance.
There will be a day when someone rides off from a stop sign, has a dead throttle & it won't end well..... :(
(And it is documented here all over the net.....)

The plus side of it is much improved bottom & mid performance, for free.

Or in my case almost hurt myself bad a few times when coming to a ditch or log at speed and cant get the front end up. That was my main motivation for removing it. Like you said the added bottom and snap is icing on the cake.

I don't mean to get people upset, but please understand that with the nature of my work and our contract/ties with Husqvarna, I would like to be able to fix the problem and have the system work properly without dismantle.

Understood.
I have been a dealer representative as an auto mech on various brands for the bulk of my working career.(But now in mining)
I have helped with feedback & changes in the past too.

With my bike I'm luckier, I don't have to answer to them :)

Tinken, this bikes aren't any longer the same manufacturer, in fact, the new brand owner doesn't care about them even a bit (i tell from my own experience). I tried to get in contact with KTM, about this problem, and the answer was "we can do nothing, cos those bikes are BMW and we don't have the HTS system for them, so go to a BMW dealer" EVEN THAT MY BIKE IS UNDER WARRANTY STILL!!! I understand your commitment with your work and your contracts, but it's also a fact, that the BF removal works...

No worries, I'm done.
We all apreciate your advices and comments. And I do agree with your commitment. I just hated so much KTM, and now much more after i got that answer from them...belive me, if i've had the person to talk to me by phone in front of me that moment....and if I could have any response or help from then to fix my bike ('cos here we don't have any help from them), i would leave the bike the way it should be (with BF). Understand my situation here, when you buy something new, and nobody responses for it...its very dissapointing

Tinken, I don't think you have upset anyone, at least not me..
And I understand your stand point, with the Husky history and what ZipTy represents, promoting a product/change, just cant be done without the proper and extensive R&D from your end.. Its clear, after reading these forums for the last year, that your posts carry more weight than anyone else on here.

I wish I had access to someone such as yourself, but the reality is my closest dealer is now a full day travel to get there and home again(Original local dealer closed 2 months after I bought the bike).

The last trip I did was to get Map Set 3, and after 7+ hours on the road, it seems that it hasn't fixed much of my problems. As you can imagine, I'm hesitate to make another trip (expense/time) to someone that just doesn't have knowledge, tools or commitment to these bikes that you do.

Having a factory fix to my problem is my 100% preferred solution, but with my location and access to the correct people/tools I just cant see that happening.

I found the PCV got rid of all the issues with my bike I still get the odd flame out when the bike isn't warm.
Racing SM on Sunday. Will vote/ report on my findings of the BF removed after.

I'm not sure what's more interesting about this thread: the Fix or the egos here debating it.

For myself, I voted that I won't being removing the butterfly. Not because it does or doesn't work, but because my bike runs fine and has for quite some time based on advice gained from this site long before some folks were around. When I first came here the standard fix was an FMF and JD Tuner. Before those fixes my bike was slow and prone to flame out on a regular basis. With the slip on and relatively inexpensive tuner, the bike rips and chugs along like a tractor, never stalling out. The air bypass adjustment is also old news, but it sure did the trick on my bike to solve the throttle hanging. I have always run 1150cc of oil and never experienced flow into the air box - maybe I'm lucky. I put a heavier spring on my shock, revalved the forks, and cleaned up the rear fender. I like the idea behind Seat Concepts and plan to get that done next week. Other than that, I'm done.

I think the 449/511 is a fine bike capable of holding its own against any other with a competent rider on board. As explained, I've done my share of mods to the bike, and I understand some folks love to mod stuff just for the adventure in it. Others might just have money to burn. What I don't understand is why people get into pissing matches over this stuff when maybe they ought to be out riding.

Peace.

Great to hear that there are bikes out there running well with little modification.
Some others have problems too and the various collection of fixes is growing, all good stuff that benefits us all

So I gave the removed butterfly a proper shakedown today racing SM and I honestly couldn't tell the difference. It may be snappier, but I think having a Power Commander covered any huge differences that could have been noticable.
I did how ever find the rev limiter for the first time since owning the bike.
