  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Rally intrument wiring

The Tuareg rally is coming soon and I'm hoping that the Husky comunity can help.
I need to wire in a roadbook, IMO 100 R300 and GPS. My problem is do I run a wire directly to the battery or pick off a live feed from a handy connector behind the headlamp?

There is also the question of having the feed switch / fused as appropriate. Oh, and how about an auxilliary socket to charge a cell phone as an extra.

I'm not going to run HID lights or anything so I'm hoping that I wont need any electrical upgrade?

Any of you Baja / rally raid riders have any pointers. Thanks Mike

The best thing would be to run a heavy gage wire directly from the battery to behind the headlight, then runn your power leads from there through a switched fuse box to the individual components.

In the Dakar you are required to run power directly from the battery to the Nav equipment (sentinel, iritrack, IMO speedo, road book, etc...) on an independent circuit.

I'd run something like this:

FZ-1 Fuse-block:

or this:
PDM-60

Several operational modes for different circuits: Ignition sensing with “always on,” “timed off” or “ignition off” configurations allow wiring some devices that need to stay “live” when the key is off, such as some GPS units and radio memories, and others that don’t, like heated grips. One 15 amp circuit is externally switchable with small, low current switches for lighting, etc., meaning no need to add extra relays. Ground buss. Includes all necessary wire connectors for installation. Completely waterproof and sealed to IP67 standards.

or this more simple solution:

Thanks for this. I'm getting my rally stem delivered soon and I'll be making up the appropriate loom / swich modules when I see what I can fit and where. These modules should keep eveything neat, tidy and above all manageable.
I've had a good read of the sites and the links and have invested in proper bootlace crimps and tooling to further keep things under control. I've also got a fair supply of zip ties and spiral wrap.

Thanks again. Mike
ps I might take a photo and post it. If I do may I cite you for the bibliography.
