• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Rear sag setting?

BACKMARKER

Husqvarna
A Class
I weigh 195 in full gear and am trying to get my sag set at aprox. 4in. My rear preload was set almost to max from the factory I now have it backed off but am only at 3 1/4 rider sag. Am i wrong in trying to get 4in of rider sag? Either this bike is sprung very stiff or my math is wrong.Should i keep going till i get 4in. or what should be the correct setting?? 2011 te-630 b.t.w..

They are sprung pretty stiff for the average fat American butt. Doesn't make as much of a difference on my SMS, but I did back the rear preload down a bit, I'm ~205 in gear. You can pick up some softer springs as some here have.

Do both models have the same spring? I thought the SM had a shorter shock and spring?

I'm about 185 -190 loaded, probly a bit more with a backpack and all that crap. I'm right at about 4" of sag with the spring stop about three quarters of the way backed off. You get to a point out there where the whole thing gets pretty soft, so it might make sense to get a rate that matches. At some point I think a suspension pro might be of benefit.

If I take the wifey for a spin I need to run it back down, she's almost the same weight. Surprising the bike does just fine for a road trip with such a load.

Set race sag to 100mm shortly after buying my 630. Static sag was 52mm indicating much too stiff rear spring. Replaced stock 6.4kg/mm spring with a 5.4 kg/mm over the winter. Same race sag and static sag changed to 35mm (ideal is 25-35mm). Replaced front springs also. Stock rear spring on these bikes is OK for a 260+ lb rider or maybe two small ones. I am 180lb naked.

So, if the spring is too stiff for your weight, then when set for proper race sag the static sag is too much?

Is that why mine is so spongy for the first bit of travel?

Yup...you back it off so far to get the loaded sag that the whole thing is too soft. It sags down to 100mm, but then is so soft it keeps on going down over the smallest bumps. The idea is to get it to the 100mm sag, at which point it then starts to tighten up.

I put a 5.8 spring in mine and it's still too soft. I'm eventually going to get a 5.4. That way, I'll get the loaded sag I need, but the bike still has some spring to it. I weigh 175 with street clothes on...

Sounds like a new spring in my future. I can only see it getting worse after a single Leo ti exhaust is installed.

Wow. I knew spring rate was critical on my KTM with linkless, (it is spot on) but no idea on the TE. Where can I get a spring?
The front seems pretty good, I like it. Only bottoms out once per ride. :applause:

I got lucky - I had the bike on the lift the other night and decided to check sag. Measured it w/ wheels dangling....and again with the weight of the bike. Had the wife measure with me on it, and I was right at 4.125" (~105mm) race sag.

I knew the bike felt sprung a bit heavier than the 610 I had, and the first time I had this bike offroad I was pretty happy with how it rode in fast rough terrain. Very happy.
Usually bikes seem to be sprung for much lighter riders, but I didn't even need to touch spring preload on the shock on this one. The 610 took a bit more preload to get dialed in. The spring rate is probably similar so maybe they just put more preload on.

Halls have a good selection.

Funny, I went with the stock 6.4 in the rear and .52 in the front and had Les remove the spacers to regain the 1" the factory took away to make the bike more short person friendly. Bacically the same now as my 610 was. LTR rules! Oh, I am 6'5 and weigh 240.

Les Tinus set my 610 up with a 5.8 rear and 46 front when I weighed 175.
