  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Rebuild options for blown TE 250 motor

AA Class
I have a 2008 TE 250 (with Athena BB kit) that I am considering rebuilding before I give up on her. Need to replace the piston, connecting rod, valves and probably need to rebuild the crank (haven't got that far yet). The head and cylinder are also damaged, but I am hoping to have them repaired rather then replacing.

I have been checking around for about two weeks now for used parts.. ebay, ebay.uk, craigslist etc. and there just isn't anything out there for these bikes..

but my real question is what kind of aftermarket support for these bikes is there? I tried looking for parts from typical parts companies like Vesrah, Wiseco, Hot Rods and not finding anything for this bike.. am I pretty much doomed to paying OEM prices? - like $700+ for a crank assembly and $150 per valve etc. Hot Rods sells crank kits for around $200

If I can rebuild this thing for (well) under $1500, it will be worth it to me as I really like the power (compared to any other 250f) and how it rides, plus the street legal aspect, but I already have almost $6k (including a BRAND new valve job that costs over $800 and lasted for all of 30 miles) in to this bike and have exactly six rides on it.. so not wanting to sink a whole lot more in to it..

I also checked, but cannot confirm if Athena sells a piston kit, as I have read their rings and pin are proprietary.. can anyone confirm that? I am not finding a website for them (only the UK one, but not sure if it's the same company)

You can rebuild it for a fair price if you're patient. Call bigger dealers like Hall's and ask around for spare parts that they may have laying around.. Thats where I got a 510 bottom end. Ask for Jeff, he's great to deal with.
Also try emailing Fugi's factory. He's an ebay seller. Just open one of his items and use the "ask seller" feature

Wiseco makes a piston kit. Remember seeing that when I first bought my 06 250. (I thought all 250's shared the same motor parts from 05-09 until they changed to that new X-lite motor)

To replace the con-rod and lower bearing on the crank is about $100 or a little more in labor.. seen that price from several people.

I might have some 250 motor parts here in the next couple winter months. Keep in touch? Might have a bottom end to trade you if it'll work. (stock '06 TC250 but with 5spd)

Definately call around to some of the shops. Bills Motorcycle Plus (in Salem Oregon I think) and Uptite have been known to have these parts from salvage.

thanks.. keep the ideas and encouragement coming.. I have a line on a pretty decent low mileage CRF250x for a good price but if there's hope on getting the parts, I can hold off trail riding till spring (which is tough, cuz we ride all year round up here..) and would prefer to keep the TE.. and frankly, I guess I am a little discouraged from the lack of third party and take/off options.. coming from a bunch of KTM bikes, I knew that Husky spare and used parts market would be no where near that of KTM (or the Jap bikes), but was hoping there would be some market out there..

anyway, one thing I have found regarding used barrels etc.. is there do seem to be a lot of the stock 250 barrels from folks going with the BB kit, (Tasky said he has a couple) but have not seen anything for bigger barrel yet.. so all will depend on whether the head and cylinder can be salvaged so I need to send those down to my head guy asap.

check ebay usa.................. i think i saw something on there it was a full motor striped down

so here's some close ups.. the pictures tell a lot, but not really what the cause was.. the crank is frozen (can't turn it) and looking down in the crankcase, I don't see any broken parts.. the rod has a bit of slop in it, and other then looking like a banana, it's all intact and solid and seems to be pretty solidly attached to the crank from what I can see and feel.. so don't think it was an issue with the con-rod bearing. It's going to be interesting to see what the transmission looks like as it seems that must be where the motor must of locked up.
