  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

rebuilding the SMR450 - what extras are worth considering?

A Class
hi gang,

i'm after some advice on the best bang for buck mods for my smr450. it's a 2006 model, and the engine is being overhauled at the moment following big end failure a few months ago

this will be my primary race bike (i'm racing my 2005 smr530 at the moment) once it's all finished

so far i've had the suspension revalved (it's on the 530 at the moment) with the fbf 15mm offset triple clamps, i've got a couple of sets of wheels (both 5" rears), and the guys at motosportz have helped me out with the engine bits including a fbf high comp piston. i've also got a factory smrr intake cam to go in, and it's running a full titanium akra exhaust

what's going to be the best addition to that lot? i'm stuck between a slipper clutch (and which brand to go for?) and thinking about the cdi - husky smrr or aftermarket eg vortex or jd? or is there something else i've not thought of?

thanks for your advice!
will

Get an Adler Adige APTC slipper, a lot of us are running it and it works great. Mine was under $750 brand new, and any dealer can get it for you through Tucker Rocky or Parts Unlimited. Cant remember which. BTW, how much did the FBF triples run you? Im looking to buy a set soon.

i got the fbf triples off their ebay site - us$260 as i recall. they don't fit though ... the holes for the steerer tube are too large and i've had to get both shimmed down to fit, and the holes for the bar mounts are too close together to use the stock bar clamps (they're correct for the 2005 bar mounts that go with the 45mm forks on my 530 luckily)
it's probably cheaper to get the stock triple clamps welded and re-machined for a 15mm offset - that's my next job for the 45mm clamps that will go back on the 530
with the adige do you need special tools to install (like the stm)? easy to set up? no-one over here has heard of them which makes me a little reluctant...

That's odd about the triple clamps. They claim to have a set for 50mm SMR in 15mm offset. What is the part # for your clamps?

About the slipper, Adler is the manufacturer of the slipper clutches sold in the KTM hard parts catalog and also used by TM. There is at least 3 other members here who have them in their SMR's including me and everyone has great things to say about them.

I am currently running the Alder. Adjustments are really easy and can be done in 5 min at the track.

i'll go and check the number on the triple clamps in the morning, but they're apparently the same as the ones listed on the main fbf website for about $450! dunno why they had them in their ebay store ..... or maybe it's 'cos they don't actually fit.
had a bit of email contact back and forth with fbf, they seemed to be interested in the problems i've had with the triples, until they offered to 'help' with other parts i need - i mentioned a slipper clutch hoping for a nice discount as a token, but instead they have just said nothing since then! maybe i don't want their slipper after all...
the adige slipper seems to be winning at the moment ... has no-one changed the cdi/ignition thing on their husky? are the husky ones that good?

Well I just ordered a set of FBF 15mm triples for my 09. Guess I will find out if they fit or not. I had to buy mine from them at $420 as the ones in their ebay store were for 45mm forks only. According to their parts guy, they use the stock steering tube. As for the clamps, that doesnt bother me as I have a set of Protaper clamps I will be using that dont have a bridge connecting the 2.

Im looking into ignitions as well. Im building a 530 right now kinda like your 450 willy! Akra Ti exhaust, RR intake cam, R.D. Titanium valve springs and keepers (needed for the RR cam). I want something used and affordable tho.. Anyone have something used they'll be getting rid of in the near future?

Speaking of triples, I have a set of 18mm triples that I machined to fit the 50mm zocch's onto a suzuki. Now that the forks are going back onto a husky Im going to machine the triples and fit some inserts. Im going to try and make some offset inserts to make the whole set adjustable. Maybe like 15/17mm? or something else. What are the offset on an RR model from the factory?

from what I can tell from the parts listing 15mm.
according to a few people 15mm is the setup you want to run.

I should have the clamps when I get home from work in a bit.
I will know right away if they fit or not.

Is your double posting a result of using a phone? I had that happen a little while ago, but hasn't happen since. Kinda weird...

Let us know what happens with your FBF triples

Yeah, its from when I use my Blackberry.

Well I got the triple clamps in, and guess what, they dont fit..... LOL The hole for the steering tube on the top clamp is about .005" too small and wont fit. Not a huge deal since my good friend is a machinist, but still kinda sucks considering a set of $420 triples don't fit. I havent tried the bottom clamp yet, I need to press out the head tube on the original one. I'll get around to that this weekend probably.

Oh, and for what its worth, my 09 stock clamps are 15mm offset. Overall I like the FBF triples, they look trick, the top clamp is going to be more rigid, and its something to one up my friends with. LOL

Wait, did I read that right? the STOCK 2009 smr clamps are 15mm offset? If thats the case, why spend 400+ to upgrade the looks of your triples? lol When did you find this out? Did you measure them?

so the FBF triple clamps are wrong for your bike too!?! i assumed it was to do with the model year changes happening out of sync (with me being southern hemisphere etc) but i guess it's just their machining!
regarding the stock triple clamps, on my 2005 with 45mm forks the offset is 25mm, and on my 2006 with 50mm forks the offset is also 25mm (centre of steerer tube to centre of fork tube). the area that the steerer goes through looks designed to have a hole put anywhere in it though - next job get the 45mm clamps welded and redrilled for 15mm offset
one of the guys i race with has a 2009/2010 (not sure which sorry) SMRR which started as a 530 but is currently a 450. he's got adjustable triple clamps (which incidentally come from the factory with the inserts positioned for 15mm offset - why didn't they just do that with all of them?)

anyone else played with the vortex? can anyone explain it to me?

So I found out that the RR model comes with the same ignition as the smr.. The part numbers came up the same. BUT the powerup ignition from the special parts catalog is available. It raises the RPM limit from 9500 to 1100. I think it might advance the spark a little bit, but I dont remember for sure as the conversation I had with Hall's cycle involved a couple ignitions.. And to top it off, its only $120. So if your engine is still producing a good amount of power at its peak rpm, This might be something to consider.
The vortex 10 on the other hand is like $400.. But it has 10 maps, adjustable spark advance, and the option of handlebar switch for changing maps.

I was also told that an ignition cant BOOST or amplify your spark, it can only change the timing advance of the spark

Also, It seems there isnt much to do for power with these motors besides whats been talked about: Piston (high compression or 530 depending on the model. 450, 510, etc), RR intake cam and valve springs, aftermarket exhaust system (some have said dual exhaust gives a better gain), port/polish, ignition, opening up the airbox..

SH500AF said over on supermotojunkie.com that he got a 6hp gain going from a single aftermarket exhaust (Akra, Leo, or something similar) to a dual devil exhaust on his '06 450RR. On his newer 09 530RR, he has the Leo Vince dual exhaust that comes stock, but he had the silencers altered by Motosports is UK. They changed the inside bore to 50mm on both silencers

The reason I know the stock ones are 15mm is because the holes lined up exactly with the FBF 15mm clamp. So assuming the FBF clamps are correct at 15mm then the 09 clamps for sure are. I will get accurate measurements to double check my findings. Once I get my FBF clamps fitted, I will be looking to sell my stock ones if anyone would be interested.

The upper clamp hole measured at 1.014" on the FBF triple and the stocker measured at 1.019". The lower mount looks to be slightly larger by about .007" or so, but that shouldnt matter much considering how tight the tube is in there, a hammer wouldnt budge it. Gonna need a press to remove it.

As for the ignition, my bike quit making power at around 8200 RPM, so the extra rev limit wouldnt do much for my motor. Now if I had the head work and RR cam, then I could see the benefit then.
