  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

rebuilding the SMR450 - what extras are worth considering?

Thats what I spent on my used 18mm FBF triples so I think I'll pass, Thanks though MX

Why dont you return the FBF triples since they are the same offset as your stockers? I wouldnt think its worth an extra $420 to get the billet clamps.. Much better things can be had for that much money. Tires, RR cam, etc

I don't know, they look nice I guess. Might consider it tho.

Im just curious why some people have no problems running the FBF triples and others do.
Can I get some measurements of your FBF triples and head tube to compare?

I say return them and save your money! They cant bitch about you wanting to return them since they werent machined proplerly:lol: Although like you said, It wont be hard to bore out that extra .005"

Ya, Ill go measure the set on my 250, and the set thats gonna be machined for my 530.

thanks man

I need the head tube measurements for top and bottom on the clamps (there are 2 different measurements per clamp) and also the corresponding measurements on your head tube.

according to Motosportz the head bearings are the same for all of the bikes made from 2000 onwards.

Ahh. so you need the I.D. on the clamp where the steering stem presses in? I guess Im not paying attention lol. I thought you wanted me to verify the offset of the clamps :D Which part of the head tube do you need measured? the bearing pocket where the race is pressed into? I can get measurements off a bare 2006 frame later tonight or tomorrow

I just wanted to see if there was a difference in the steering tubes over the years dimensionally.

The head tube wont change because they all use the same bearings, I would think the stem is also unchanged. I do have a spare steering stem laying around, But Im not sure what year its from as it came with those triples..

Oh yeah? Can you give me a measure at the very top where the threads are for the top nut. Mine is about 1.017-1.019" in diameter. Just a hare to big to fit the top hole on the FBF triple.

Thanks, so thats 1.0177". So basically my new triple is out by just a hare.

Once I get the stem pressed from the lower triple and verify the measurements there I will make my decision on keeping them. I was gonna knock it out tonight, but my grinder is at work and I didn't realize the lower bearing has to be cut off basically.

Have you tried pressing the stem out? Sometimes you can press it out of the bearing and triple at the same time..

Ya take it in and try pressing it so you dont risk cutting something other than the bearing

Bottom triple is a perfect fit, so the clamps are fine except for the very slight issue on the top clamp.
Im keeping them and selling my stockers, bling bling :)

Hmm... I'd consider buyin the stockers but im all outa dough :(

Anyway, Back on topic! Willy, sorry about the thread jack! Any other ideas for engine improvement, power, etc?

i think i'll order the husky special parts cdi unit for the higher rev limit, and hope it does other clever stuff too ... about a fifth of the price of a vortex unit and i don't have to learn how to program it!
so hi comp piston, rr intake cam, akra exhaust, fbf triple clamps, 5" rear wheel, and a slipper when the exchange rate means i won't need another mortgage for it! doubt i'll be keeping up with the young guns on their jap stuff anyway :)

Go for a 5.5 inch rear wheel. The Excel 5.5 rim is on clearance from excel and then you can lace it to your factory hub.

Got the top clamp fitted today. It was so close I used a screw driver with a scotch brite pad taped to it chucked up in a drill and made a couple passes on it. Only needed to remove .003" to get a perfect fit.

Seems your bikes are pretty well sorted...I read about all kinds of go faster bits but nothing about upgrading the brake system. A radial brake pump is a great upgrade and not that expensive.
