  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What do you guys think of the stock Michelin Comp? Went on my second ride today and went down no less than 4 times single tracking in ruts, rocks and grass. Almost everyone was a washout or trying to climb out of a rut. I need something for east coast mountains and not desert.

They're garbage ! I am losing my front end lots, I can even get it to slip on purpose when breaking lightly down hill.
Rear isn't so bad or important but absolutely crap and will be off ASAP .
I'll be replacing with Bridgestone 404/403 combo or s12xc on the rear (get grip even in a lake !D)

Flush with the top triple clamp. This and lowering the rear sag changes the geometry attack angle of the 449. The G450x had a much less steep angle and preformed better in the sand because of this, but didn't turn tightly in rocky tight conditions. Rear race sag of 4" (101mm) is okay on the mx track or enduro trails, but not in the sand. Try adjusting your rear sag down to 4.5 or 4.75 inches. Forget the manual, use what works for you.

I lifted my forks from first ring to second ring for weekend ride, was terrible, diving and head shaking, stopped mid trail, spanner out and lifted back up to first ring, instantly 200% better, 4-5mm difference at most and chalk and cheese...amazed by that.

No deserts near is in the part of Aus i'm in, but took our bikes over to Fraser Island (The largest sand island in the world) The first 20 mins learning to ride in the deep sand was pretty scetchy, but once we worked out to just hold it pinned & let the bike move around a little is was capital A AWESOME in the sand.
Loved it :)

Freshwater track is same, 2/3ft deep soft sand, lean back and pin it ! :D

Conversely for my woods riding I found having the forks stick out the top of the clamps a good bit works well. I did have the rear lower when Ty revalved it so that might be some of it. Stable and handles awesome.

Hi Tinken. Do you know how the GT 723 holds up riding about 70% dirt and 30% pavement. I have MT21's on now and I have about 700 miles on them and the rear is over halfway gone. I have a Utah BDR ride in September which will be about 1800 miles. I would like to ride the distance without having to do a tire change halfway through the ride.

have you looked into the Kenda 270? Good all around tire and will do 1800 miles EZ. DOT.

If you are talking about your TR650 and 1800 miles, then 908RR is going to be your weapon of choice. The MT21 is highly rated, best tire of the year for awhile. The 908RR is a racing tire that is getting well known in the dual sport arena. Ivan and KTM just tested it to 115mph across Baja and I know Faboneup had great luck with it on the TR650. The Kenda is also a really good tire and a less expensive option. We run the 270's on our tour bikes. The 908 is a stronger tire, designed for bikes up to 100hp and is very tough, not likely to be punctured and has been known to last 4000+ miles. But it is expensive and might not be the right tire to fit your budget and the 270 may.

908 at 3100 miles. I think it will go 5000 before getting changed. Has already been to CO/UT twice and would go again if I was leaving tomorrow. Def not the tire for everyone, I like the stiffness/stregnth when I occasional ride two-up, and I can't imagine what it would take to puncture it (now I'll find out for sure). Not changing tires (swearing) as often also has appeal for me. That being said, pretty sure I'm going w/ a Desert Race to match the front next time.

Thank you for the responses. It looks like I will put a 908RR on a couple of weeks before I leave. I really like the MT21 they work great in the dirt and pavement. I will keep the MT21 on the front, it looks brand new.

I have no idea what to recommend for your front tire. I'm sure mt21, desert race, 908, 6days, etc. Good luck on your trip.
