  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Replacement bulb 449?

Tinken. Thanks for the bulb tip. We do a lot of night riding in Phoenix during the summer months, so I'll definately check it out. Would you be able to suggest a specific, reasonably priced, easy to install supplementary LED system for play riding at night?

I have the Cyclops buld and then 2 ADV Monster Model 60's with a dimmer installed ( http://stores.advmonster.com/model-60-led-off-road-flood-light/ and http://stores.advmonster.com/waterproof-wireless-led-dimmer-with-high-beam-bypass/ ), easy to bolt to the triple clamps:

Most any HS1 35/35 will work and won't melt the fixture. There are a few LED alternatives that look good like the cyclops. You can use an H4, but only if it 35W or less.

Are you certain about the H4 Xenons melting the OEM headlamp cover? I've bought a 55W H4 a few hours ago. I have them in my Nissan Patrol and thought the light on my bike would be brilliant.

Okay, maybe I'm getting lost in the jargon? Is a HID a Xenon bulb? I bought a 55W Xenon to replace the stock Halogen in my 449.

The replacement bulb is actually a HS1. On the outside, both H4 and HS1 are identical, except that HS1 is 35 watts and H4 can be anything from 35 to 130 watts.

You may use an H4 bulb as long as it remains close to 35 watts. The 55W H4 Xenon bulb you purchased will eventually melt your plastic housing. I have misplaced my 449 melted headlight image, but it pretty much looked like the one below.

Thanks for the heads up...so irritating when I pay for the wrong item. I hope they'll replace it for me tomorrow!! Bugger!!

Thanks Tinken
...definitely cheaper. i wonder how hot they in comparison to each other
I have the Cyclops H4 LED on my Terra, it has the little fan on the back of the bulb.
Not sure i'm going to keep it, bring it's not street legal.
May go back to a upgraded halogen over the stocker

Welcome. Yea, I don't think there is a huge difference light wise, HID runs cool. The problem is the oem reflector. A good 8 inch reflector is superior, but is ugly. I think anything is better than stock.

Today I went to swap out the 55w Xenon H4 for a 35w equivalent and discovered the store don't stock the 35w. Reason being, they said, is because in their Xenons and the 55w bulb emits almost the identical heat to their 35w bulbs. The store owner is so certain of his facts that he convinced me that the plastic lens on my 449 will not melt! I still don't know if he saw me coming and made up the story to BS me, or if his Xenon's are for real something special. I will plug it in tomorrow to see how hot it gets. The store owner is cock-sure that as long as the bulb does not touch the plastic lens, it will not melt. ... I get that sinking feeling that I've been swindled!

Haha. I have seen people drill cooling holes in their housings in order to use 45 watt bulbs. On the bright side, if it does melt the housing, you can go get an 8" HID. You should have one anyway if you are going to be doing any serious night riding/racing.

"On the bright side..." Hahahahaha

What housing would I replace the OEM one with? I haven't heard of an 8' HID.
