• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Seizing 430 motors

Lefty - I don't think any of my 430's would survive racing with a 420 main. Would like to hear about your jetting runs next weekend.

Join the club - I've been accused of trying to "compensate for something" with my big jets. I don't know what they're talking about. :excuseme:

Hi Guys,

I live in Portugal and have at this moment a 1982 CR 430.
I would like to share with you my experience with this bike.
First I was horrified when I saw what you wrote here because my bike was jetted way leaner than what you advise.
I checked my jetting and (ikes) I had a 310 main jet (****************************************).
I have been riding this bike for the past three years with this jetting without any problems regarding the jetting. No seizing, just a blown lower bearing in the rod when I put a new piston on it.
The head has no signs of lack of fuel and no marks in the sidewalls of the cylinder and piston.
I do mainly motocross races some of them in the summer with a lot of heat and now I have a dilemma: should I go up in the mainjet to a 450/460 or even a 480?
I will try a 450 next weekend and I will report if the bike runs good.

Thank you for your support.

All the best to you.

rodyzf250,
Excellent info.
The fact that you live in Portugal brings up a good point: All of my recommendations are based on U.S. fuels and climate. Fuels over there can be different. How much that would affect jetting is hard to say. Also, atmospheric heat is different from engine heat. Hot air makes the bike run richer. As does humidity. If you live in a hot humid climate you will not need as large numbers on the jets.

You have a 310 main and the bike is "fine" except that you lost a rod bearing. Was that from lubrication or just old age? I'm sure we don't know.

If you've never tried to find your blubber jet it might be helpful to try it, then work down. But also notice my comment in a previous post that you can get away with a smaller main if you ride only MX. WOT periods are not that long, and you may be safe if the other circuits are OK.

excellent point

Picklito,
excellent point, i've got a 340 Main in my 430CR, & i had that
bubbery mid range til i lowered it, but i run my in VMX only &
probably not on the main that much. But i does run like animal :D

My got a 38mm Mukuni
2.0 slide , 50 pilot , 340 main, 1 from the top on the needle
& 1 turn on the air screw & i'm @ sea level.

I have looked into both carbs from my 2 430 motors and her is what I found
idle 45
needle jet r4
needle 6dh3 pos 3
slide 2 but cut to mabie a 4 if there is sucu a thing
main 440

the new motor has this
idle 40
needle jet r0
needle 6dh20 whatever that is pos 2
slide 3
main450

I have ordered all the parts to jet both carbs to Piclitos recomened settings for sea level starting with 480 mains, bikes will be ready to ride soon, thanks for all the help on this, I will post my findings

Sounds good Dave J. I'll be interested to hear how the numbers work "across the pond." But...

"The new motor"... won't be seeing full throttle main jet runs for 3 tanks of gas... right?

Gave the 430 a run out yesterday in preperation for a mx meeting next weekend with the jetting as piclito recomended
idle 40
needle jet r4
needle 6dh3 pos 3
slide 2 but cut to mabie a 4 if there is such a thing
main 480
the temp was cold about 8 deg, the bike felt great responsive of the bottom and a clean midrange . Due to the terain I didn't get on the main jet much but when I did it was still clean and did not feel rich so with the 480 main jet had not got to the blubber zone,
Its going to be on the main jet more next weekend so I will have a better idea of the top end mixture is like then. I did notice the motor was running a lot cooler now a feel more confident that we are past the seizing problem.

That sounds good, Dave. Amazing how these old air-cooled bikes can soak up the fuel when they're working hard. Let it flow, keep 'em cool!

one thing everyone missed...said he rebored the cyl. who,s piston did you use??
Wiesco is know for expanding easy.
i found that a little larger bore works will..just a tad over what the book says.
had a 450 CR that would get seize when you ran it hard, i played with the jets for weeks,
then open up the bore a bit, cured the issue, and the bike still runs hard, 6 years later.

True about Wiseco pistons. they work good in smaller bores and cylinders that haven't had much porting work. They expand very quickly in modified cylinders and larger bore motors. You can set those pistons up another one to one and a half thousandth over what is recommended without any problems.

Sorry for the late reply, but here it is the complete report:

Took the bike for a spin upped the main jet from the original 310 to a 380, checked the spark a after a full throttle run in a straightaway and the plug looked brownish.

Changed the mainjet to a 410 and the plug seemed fine.

In the track the bike and a little hic hup in the transition from the low's into the middle range. Put the needle in the first position and the bike seemed fine. Checked the plug after a 15 minute moto and the plug had dark coloration and a few oily spots.

The needle is the stock one.

I used to use AVGas but this time changed to regular pump fuel. Here in Portugal the the fuel has good quality, no alcohol added, just plain fuel with 98 octanes and no lead.

May have seen my older thread "another 82-430XC" Got the bike home today. Its a one owner WELL USED bike but at the time he called and wanted to know if I was interested in it I couldnt pass it up. I helped assemble it new working after school at the Husky shop. Bike was bought new to run HareHounds and desert races in the PNW. He siezed it soon after it was new. Money wasn't a big thing-dad sponsor so it went out of town for the rebuild. Stock, my 80-390/420 would walk on by. When he got the engine back I was changing air filters at a rapid pace from the dust. Somewere in the late nineties he siezed it and parked it for good. Piston in it was same first over from the 83 rebuild. I talked to him at length about the bike and how well it ran when I picked it up. When he had engine rebuilt he had piston ported, barrel ported, Mossbarger reed and Asch pipe/Skyway silencer. He said he never touched carb. after they tuned it. Here are the carb specs, very similiar to Picklito's. He said it started good, must have because kicker is still pretty tight.

500 Main
R-6 Needle Jet
6DH4/#2 clip
40 Pilot
No Air Jet
3.0 Slide
He thought they may have also bored the carb but I haven't verified that yet and he didn't remember for sure. He gave me every recipt including MSO, warranty card, Pipe was spendy in 83-$150! Showed orig. sales recipt for it $2395 to my friend who owned the Husky shop and he got a kick out of it, said it was one of the last he sold. He said dealer support from Husky was getting poor so he sold it to another local bike shop before ordering any 83 models.
