    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Should I Buy A Tr650 With The Dreaded Ews Code Tha Wont Start?

Hi, I just looked at a TR650 with an EWS code that wont start. New battery, 4140 miles, looks like it's been dropped, a few internal plastics cracked. He says he bought another ignition from Halls' Cycle in Springfield to match the Vin number of this bike, says it doesnt need a chip. He just hasn't installed it yet. Put the key in, turn it, lights come on, it doesn't start.
I'm trying to make sure I don't need to replace dash and ECU, which i hear costs 2000, and i'm not willing to spend that. I live in Minnesota so finding someone with MOSS is an impossibility (as far as i'm aware)

Oh I forgot to say he has keys for both ignitions, they are naked copies. With no black plastic or anything to hold a transponder
 
First of all the guy is full of ****
The actual ignition lock has nothing to do with the chip that the EWS reads.
The Antenna around the Ignition switch is what reads the Chip in the key and matches it to the data in the eeprom in the dash to allow the bike to start.
Obviously he does not have the original key so the bike will never start.

There is a way round this problem and it involves having keys made up and programmed to the existing data in the dash eeprom.
There is a guy here in Philippines who can do it just from reading the dash. For $100 he could make up a chip fob that would sit on the key ring and allow the bike to be started with the copy key you have. The antenna would simply read the key fob and think that it was an original key.
I am sure there must be similar people in USA that can do the same thing.

As for the price of $2K it depends on condition etc but it maybe not a bad deal if you can get the key as above.

I bought my perfectly running Strada with Husky panniers and some extras for $3k with sun fading

My friend picked his up for $2700 with panniers and windscreen garage queen 18k miles

$2000 is a bit steep for a bike that needs computer work.

But from you description, I am not sure what is going on. You do need a chipped key to run em, if he has no chipped key, you will have to order one from husky ($40-$80). You might get lucky and his tom foolery of losing keys gets you a bike reasonable, but seems to have low miles.

How smashed is a consideration too.

If it were closer, I would look at it. Try jumpering the starter motor to spin it and make sure the rotating parts are in working condition.

If so, for me, this would be the perfect bike for the micro squirt conversion ($1,000 or so). The wheels and motor are worth money, so you wouldn't lose your shirt if you did not get it running.

$600 minimum for the wheels
$800 for engine

The rest of the parts for your trouble and investment.

$1,500 tops is what I would pay, and that is dependent on the rest of the bikes condition. But do consider, I am always on the low side as I am always looking for a great deal. But then again, because I am well versed with this bike, I am willing to pay more than alot of people. So if it is in your budget, worst case scenario is you part it out after investing thousands more with husky ecu.

Best case you get a key ordered from husky and start driving.

I seriously doubt he can make/clone the rfid. Has he had any success making one for the TR650?

Anyway, the dealer can order it up for less than $100 and it is guaranteed to work, as long as the rest of the system is working. My spare cost $40 and 6 months to get. The parts channel is faster now.
 
So you guys are saying I could just call up the dealer and they can order you a chipped key off the dash that'll work (if the antenna ring isn't at fault?) Or do they need your bike in the shop?

Not quite that easy, you have to go in person and prove ownership. They didn't need to see my bike, but each dealer is different. Call your dealer and ask them what is needed. They will/should contact husky and get a form to fill out. That form asks alot of questions about ownership and residence.

If the guy swapped ecu or dash, well totally different ballgame.
 
So I saw this bike on Craigslist. Not in person just in photos. The key in the photo that shows the dash at "ews" is a plain metal copy and can't start bike.
 
Re chipped keys, do a search re Silca, they provide the hardware and software to locksmith's for keys and chipped keys including BMW EWS 3

Last time I looked (and looked HARD!!) it wasn't an issue of the key blank (which IS a Silca!) or any run-of-the-mill chip but some sort of (then!) special chip for the Husky that was in-cloneable.
I posted it up here, somewhere...with all specs and numbers.
Silca only ever made the ignition locks and matching keys..... not the chips/ antenna/ software/ etc...AFAIK.
Then again..things change.

Ah you needed to get up earlier that day :) , thinking it was a "special" for the TR650 is the first mistake, it is BMW EWS Revision 3, the IC No has been known for a long time and the documentation on the BMW EWS systems has also been out there for a long time, well before the TR650 was released. None of which means Silca have updated their software for preparing keys for the TR650 though.
 
Wnen did BMW start putting immobilizer on the 650?

The aftermarket RFID cost more than ordering a key from husky, but good luke finding the RFID, I spent way more time on the TR650 key issue than anybody should have to. It was not clone able in 2014.

Glitch, it was over at adv, I believe.

No EWS on the BMW 650's and very glad we dont have it :) . The TR650 though is a K024 model which means CAN and EWS as per F800/R1200, it is BMW EWS and when you order a key from Husky they then order it from BMW, the BMW Dealers can program up to 4 keys into the TR650. The difference between the TR650 and the BMW F800/R1200 models is that the Transponder/Evaluation Electronics is split on the TR650 with the evaluation electronics in the dash rather than as a single unit at the key lock connected directly back to the BMS which adds another complication for the TR650.
 
LOL , I was looking in craigslist for bike going cheap this time of year and saw this bike as well , came here to see what it would be involved to fix it . Guess I got my answer . I do have a complete Microsquirt system sitting here that I was going to use on another bike , but... I could probably use many/all? the BMW sensors ?? What did they use for a speed wheel for the crank rpm on this bike ?
 
Had a automotive key-cutting mobile service around this week. Cutting and cloning a key for a van.
After the work was done, 15-20 minutes. (at half price when compared to dealerships) I quizzed him about the TR key and he claimed he could clone any key.
He whipped out his red silca FCP cloning machine and :( he said he could read the key but couldn't copy it. And offered me a code to quote.
I have two keys so I didn't bother with the code #.
So I just had a key cut for a $50,000 dirtbike transporter. WTH was BMW thinking for a $9100 motorcycle.

edit; He also mentioned the RFID was passive, powered by energy usually supplied from the antennas.

I think BMW had lofty aspirations for the Husky line with the Nuda and Terra. Then just gave up.
