  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

SMR530RR differences

Planepower

Husqvarna
AA Class
Seeing as im already in process of building a 530 from a 450, what is the differences - i.e. CDI, camshafts, cylinder head ports/ valves/ combustion chamber?
This engine has the 6 speed tranny, electric start (no kick), 530 cylinder and piston, studs, camchain, crank, and balancer shaft/ gear.
The head is being rebuilt entirely, and have the SMR cams reused.
If i wanted to make this a full-fledged RR copy what else would i need?
This racing season im up against a Husa 550, 3 APR 550, ex-factory KTM SM 450 (4spd), XR 650R, RMZ450, CRF's 450's. Its going to be a heated field this year - i just want to have a better season after a DRZ 400 (usually finishing 5th and capturing 4th overall in my club).

The only difference is CC's. They use the same head for 450 and 530..

You'll need an RR intake cam and heavy duty valve springs, port/polish, upgrade valves if you want, ignition, exhaust, and the RR's are carburated rather than injected. RR cam is about $3xx, valve springs are about $225. Need HD springs if you do the cam

husky has a bolt on 530cc kit that comes with everything you need, it should be in their special parts catalog.

The 530 kit is just the big bore kit, nothing else as far as RR parts. It comes with cylinder, piston, wristpin, circlips, rings, and head gasket. Planepower has the kit already listed on his build tho.

True that. However they do offer a 510tc to smrr510 head kit as well. For the price though you may be better of working the head yourself.

I saw that in the special parts catalog. The head has gone to Jeff at Halls for upgraded valves and springs. I have rebuilt a TC 450 and will be starting the season with that (kick start and TC ecu). But first it's heading to the dyno for tuning the carb - hoping to match 60hp! Lol
Thanks for the inputs. I'll post results and pics when completed, and awaiting sponsor decaling.

Did the first start after overhaul on the 450 ( thanks 7602 Racing).
Started up 2nd kick, brought it up to temp and observed that there's no leaks! Once the last of the parts order arrives I'll book the dyno for break-in.
Stay tuned...

Cool! So you were able to convert my old 450 to a 530? I'm glad you were able to revive that motor. Got any pics? I'm excited to hear how she runs once you get her on the street.

Well, kinda.... I kept your engine as the 450. Just put in a fresh crank and bearings, used my existing head (from the SMR - ported and polished), used the TC cams and CDI. I did that for weight savings and for the 5 speed tranny.
The SMR engine (electric start) will be converted to a 530. I have a fresh 510 crank, case studs, new 510 timing chain and balancer gear.
All im waiting for is the head to get repaired (yes its pricey) and then its assemble time.

Thanks for the deal on the engine Clay - heres a 85% complete picture.

Are those talon hubs? They look trick. You should habe no problem getting 60hp out of your engine. We dynoed a stock 07 tc450 with a tc 250 stator assembely and it had 53 or 54 hp. By the way I have one of those 7602 oil filter covers, they are awsome. Anodizing kind of faded on mine but I understand that it was probably a bad batch or something. Make sure to wire that accelerator pump on the carb, it really does improve the throttle response alot.

Not Talon hubs, RAD hubs. But I'm having trouble spacing and installing a front 320mm disc - 6mm bolt holes vs 8mm, and hub isn't centered on axle :(.
Pretty, but all in all, an unpleasant experience.

Hey Planepower, I just noticed your in Edmonton! I'm in Calgary, we need to meet up and go ride! I'm just in the process of liquidating all of my Husky Supermoto bikes and parts which is kind of sad. I loved my Huskies but am going to try a Japanese bike this year. Anyway, I have a use set of SMRR wheels if your loosing patience with the RAD ones. 16.5" front and 5.5" rear. Not the tubeless ones though

. Shoot me a PM and we can trade contact info. I want to know more about the Edmonton supermoto scene and you need to come down to Calgary and play sometime!

Well I'm glad you were able to use the bike to make something you needed. Man I didn't realize just how much that clutch cover had faded until I see it in someone else garage. Bad batch like Joe said. That oil filter cover was actually done before the clutch and it is still bright red like it's supposed to be. Good luck this season!

So swapping stators is good? - does it affect (lower) midrange performance? and torque? How would the TC250 run with the TC450 stator? Would it make the engine a bit more managable? - as in, easier to run in the trails without all the clutch lever feather i have to do now.

Explain...

You need a 250 stator, cover, flywheel and ignition. It makes a noticeable difference where the motor will spin up quicker. Though If you need lights, you'll need to use a TE stator. I swapped my TC250 stator into my 530 and went riding. I liked the quicker acceleration, but as soon as it got a little darker, I realized I had a dim candle for a headlight :D

I just did that this weekend. Not interested in street riding with its 450 engine. Once i get the 530 built up i may make it street-legal.
I luckily have a 2007 TC250 and just swapped rotors, stators, and covers. Im hoping the 250 isnt too handicapped.
Still mid-winter here, no melting happening, so no chance to ride :(

So you guys that swapped the flywheel and stator/cover assemblys didnt have to do any other mods? just bolt it on plug it in and BRM,BRM away you went?

Flywheel/ stator and ECU MUST go together or bikes won't work. Found that out the hard way.
Anyone need a TC 250 ECU? I got a spare one :-/
