    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Starter solenoid dramas

So my starter relay just clicks away and the motor won't turn over. Honestly it has been doing this (intermittently) for the last year. Most of the time it fires up no problems but every now and then i may need to click the button quite a few times to engage the starter.

So this morning I must of hit the button 300 times with only the clicking to give me joy :/

What's your experience on this? Is it the relay or something else?

I'd try cleaning all the connections first and making sure everything is snug when you finish. If that doesn't cut it a new one can be procured pretty cheap, I picked up a "clone" one from Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0073HRLIW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , you just need to pull the rubber sleve off and slip the one from your 610's part to make it a direct fit.

Edited to add, just saw you live in the upside down place, Looks like shipping appears to be an extra 5.99 USD a pound.
 
I am going do some testing tonight. I have been told to check the battery voltage and cranking voltage....although i believe they will be ok.

Someone else has also suggested that the starter it self is worn out, most likely the end bushing or some other problem??? I really don't think so as it usually cranks perfectly.

Thanks Pinepig, the Amazon unit might be the way to go if all else fails. How would you clean the connections?
 
Have 12.5V at both sides of the relay and the starter motor when the button is pressed down.
I pushed doesn'tbike in gear to turn it over and then hit the button. It worked. Seems the starter motor does't have contact in certain positions. What do u think?
Battery holds 12.5v and when running charges at 14.6v
 
I'd try cleaning all the major connections next, make sure to get the ground too. Just undo them one at a time, clean the ends and whatever it attaches
to with a scotch brite pad or some emery cloth and make sure they are snug.
 
Because the is power to the starter motor i think it suggests that the problem is there. Anyone had experience in pulling the starter apart on a 610? Easy job? Are there replacable parts/brushes?
Cleaning the connections sounds like a good preventative maintainence idea as well.
 
Ok so i have a new battery. Doesn't help.

I have found that if i belt the starter motor with something hard it will turn over. But as if the battery is flat....
What would this mean?
 
That description to me spells out one thing: brushes (in the starter motor) easily replaced usually, just about any auto electrician should be able to do it
 
Jump across the 2 terminals on the solonid.

If it turns over then it's the solonid. If so then get some ACF-50 (aircraft supply store) spray it on and into the spade connectors lit it soak in then try it again.

This usually fixes 90% of them.

Put a screwdriver accross the terminals and got nothing. Am thinking it's the starter motor.
Someone has suggested brushes need replacing. Not sure if i need to take the side case off to take off the starter. Looks like it.
 
So it appears i needed to take the cover off to get the start off. I have unbolted the mounting points where the start secures to the engine.I would assume that i hit the spline pictured gently with a hammer (block of wood or similar between) to push the starter though the case. Sound right?

If the spline pushes through the case i can take the starter off as a whole unit and the can pull it apart. Am scared i migh damage it though.
