  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Steering damper question motorsportz vs GPR

HI All,

what's the difference between MOtorsportz damper and GPR/scotts?

MOtorsportz is a sponsor and I'd like to support them, but to me Damper is pretty important peice of hardware so I am loolking for some feedback.

Thanks!

plusses and minus for all 3 and all 3 are good as well another the WER. Personally Ive owned all but Motosportz. However one of our crew has a Motosportz on his 250Kato and it is a nice unit, he is a long time rider and former dealership owner and is very critical of mods and he really likes the Motosportz damper. We all set our stuff up at minimum settings, so we are not heavy damper riders, just for a little damp but easy to manuver and all have proven to be great quality products. So the choice is yours.
Well I hope that helped.
My experience is KTM250EXC WER, Huskys TC450 Scotts, TE450 GPR, TXC450 GPR all have been great and honestly I have no negatives with any of them. R

thanks!!

I used to run with HyperPro on all my street and track bikes and have them at lowest setting as well.. but hyperpro has active circuit that will compensate harder for harder input.

I had a WER damper on an old Honda XR 250. It was a great unit. Scott's is good too. But all in all whatever you go with I am sure you will not be disappointed.

I have owned 5 WER dampers in the past 20 years... And the only reason I had to buy the other 4 is that the riders that bought the bikes paid to leave them on..

I never had to try the rest so I am onesided (W.E.R) on this topic..

Full disclosure that I build / sell the Motosportz unit.

My opinion...

Scotts - Very good unit, works well for tighter woods. Is kinda large.

WER - Heard good things. Have not used on for years but liked the one i did try. Seems more designed for tight woods and might not have the amount of damping needed for dez / sand /fast stuff. Not wild over the linkage arms and frame mount but does not seem like a big deal to those that have them. Always spoken highly of by those that do have them. Designer is a off road champ and seems to be a hell of a nice guy.

GPR - Not wild over it, way to much slow speed damping for my needs. might be a good choice for dez racing.

Motosportz - Clean sheet deign 4 years ago. Based off the feel of a Scotts and adds some tricks of our own. Been well recieved and since our initial main seal redesign a few years ago 100% bullet proof. Sponsor here as well. Small format. No BS we fix it for free no matter what policy. Limited fitments.

All do a similar thing, calm the bike down, make line selections more smoothly, helps eliminate fatigue

I have the Motosportz on my TXC, had the Scott's on my WR. and bought the WER for my brothers RMX. I have ridden 3 or 4 bikes with the GPR.

I run the Motosportz at full soft for trail riding and the middle of the adjustment for Desert, MX and hare scrambles. It has a good range of adjustment for my needs.

I ran the Scott's about the same, full soft for the trails, harder for the fast stuff. It has all sorts of adjustments that I never touched, high speed, sweep angle etc... More complicated than it needs to be, if you like fiddling it may be the one for you.

The WER on my brothers RMX I run at full stiff all the time with thicker 7.5w oil vs the 5w recommended. It is barely noticeable even at full stiff. Not saying it doesn't work, if you get into a head shake situation you can feel it catch. If you want one that mostly transparent this is the one for you.

The GPR adjustment on the ones I tried goes from fairly stiff to unable to turn the bars stiff. Seemed to work ok but they were all on the stiff side for my tastes. Also the adjustment can be bumped backwards from 1 (soft) to 8 (hard) in one click. Could lead to a scary situation.

Cost wise I paid the most for the Scott's and the least for the WER, with the Motosportz in the middle of the two.

My preference is...

1. Motosportz
2. Scott's
3. WER
4. GPR

Later,

thank you for the responses! Here are my needs for the damper in order of priority. Based ot this list, will motosportz still top the list?

Bike is 09 TE510, IMS 3.5 tank.

1. Help control high speed wobble at high speeds when in SUMO setup with 17' wheels
2. most of my trail riding is at slow speed and very rocky. need some help to control the front.
3. I crashed in the deep sand the other day...handlebars just got away from me somehow..

thanks again!

Yes, for that list the Motosportz would work well... Accept for number 2, to me that seems more like a suspension setup issue. The damper will help but ideally you would want to setup your suspension to work well in the rocks. The damper should be there to catch the odd hidden rock and keep the bars from being ripped from your hands. Or the high speed sand wobble.

A damper is not a substitute for a good suspension setup.

I've had a GPR and have a Motosportz and like the easy of use on the Motosportz with the wiper type adjustment, easy to use on the fly instead of twisting something. :)

I'm biased but I have used the WER for the last 7 years and it is flawless. MPS Racing use them on their race team Huskys. Small, light, out of the way and very very effective.
Mick Extance used them for years in the Dakar.
A lot of the Freestyle guys use them including Travis!

I have a motosportz on my husky, I like the easy adjustable switch.
Motosportz is guarenteed for life so thats a huge kicker for me.

I wish it had a high/low setting but thats just mental I never seem to think about it on the trail.

But my friends have gpr and a scott. they both seem to like them.

ive had ohlins and the motosportz... in fairness, on,y the motosportz on the husky, but i have to say, its the best investment ive made for the bike so far, and that includes all the little power gimmicks. makes riding like a hooligan waaaaaaaayyyyy easier, and keeps the bars from swapping from side to side, ever. never ride without it now. set on low, all youi ever need, unless droning on the freeway from one exit to another down a hill, then medium.

oh and the best part about it, is kelly there to help you whenever whatever regarding his products. super cool dude, great warranty, and in my book totally worth it.

I've had several different brand dampers on several different bikes and they all do what they are supposed to do but my personal preference is
the motosportz damper. I like the feel of it, the quick "on the fly" adjustment, the look and attention to detail that they put in it. I also like dealing with Kelly and his crew and of course the price is right.

I've used the Scotts, GPR and now Motorsports on everything from KX500, CR500, WR450, WR426, KTM450, DRZ400 and now a Husky TE450. Scotts and the GPR work great with the GPR being a little on the slow side, used it mostly at 1 or 2. The Motorsports mounted great on my Husky and works as advertised, feels most like the Scotts. Very happy so far.
