  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Steering lock removal

My 310's (non x-lite) steering lock mechanism recently stopped working and around the same time started making a slight clunky noise when turning the bars left-right/right-left. I'm assuming the locking pin or something might be broken off inside the steering head.
Can you remove the steering lock without dismantling the whole steering head?

It's pretty simple to take it all apart... personally I would not want to have metal knocking around in there, I like to be able to steer 100% of the time.
Simple it may be, but lazy and time poor am I at present.
It doesnt seem to be restricting the free movement of it but you can just hear something slightly wrong.

Look at your parts manual see what's in there. Will it lock and unlock normally? Are you sure it is the lock making the noise?

OKAY What could happen?
I've absolutely no idea, but the entire idea of metal floating around where it should not be does not sound ideal to me.
Maybe the steering would be impaired, maybe the metal will grind into bits/flakes, maybe nothing bad will happen... don't know.

I removed mine by removing the outer cover, then inserting the key, pushing down and rotating until it popped out.

I installed a new one. You can put the cover back on and swing it shut if you don't wish to put one back in.

Not 100% sure, it wonlt lock/unlock properly anymore, and the lock stopped working properly at the same time as the steering movement developed the slight clunky noise (you can only just hear it). My guess is a component failed causing the lock to stop working and might be caught in the shaft somewhere.
I just thought someone may have experienced this before and has a remedy.

Does the outer cover just pull off? I cant see any external securing points i.e. a bolt to unscrew. I know how to pull the steering head apart but will avoid it if I dont have to do it.
