• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Stony (Stonyford) is burning...But Rehab Is Right Around The Corner!

Apparently Mill Valley campground has been burned, at least that is what I am assuming...
It is a series of fires - 'Sites' is about 1/2 way between the town of Maxwell and Ladoga (Lagoda?, both spellings are on my map).

Fire officials said evacuations were in effect for the communities of Fouts Springs, Bonnie View and Board Camp Springs, as well as campgrounds in the Upper Letts Lake area. Parts of Stonyford were under voluntary evacuation.
The Mill fire cause remained under investigation.

Even 65 miles south of Mill Valley the air is a bit smoky.. those mountains should be crystal clear.

Not good. :(

I heard this on the news yesterday and can see some of the smoke off in the distance from Vacaville. Hope it get under control soon. These winds, plus 100+ degree weather makes it a nightmare.

We've been having a lot of fires down this way in the last month or two. Most have managed to get put out before they burned too many acres. I think the most acreage was 1500 in the Banner fire. Fire season has started early for sure.

was in mill valley campground last thursday while riding stony.took a little break to fill the camelback.the campground was about 3/4 full.it was mayham with all the kids riding around on their chinese quads!they were having fun but i would not want to be camping there.hope the fire gets controlled soon.dan

As far as I can tell, after hours of research, this fire is about 10 mile south west of the Foresthill CA riding area - which is sorta close to Auburn on I-80, between Sacramento & Lake Tahoe. It started about 330 yesterday. The article is a bit dated, they now have 500 firefighters on it, and it is 220 acres. :

Cal Fire reported that the fire started at the junction of Shirttail Canyon Road and Yankee Jims Road, where it crosses the North Fork of the American River. Cartoscelli said the cause of the blaze was under investigation.

Apparently the plan is to let it burn.....

I *seriously* hope that is not correct, it shows them intentionally giving up a large amount of M10 just uphill (to the left) of Fouts Springs which is paved.

Here is my interpretation of what their plan appears to be, Sullivan Ridge to the south, all the way to the flatlands to the east, but save the homes/cottages in the west... at least that is my personal interpretation:

I ride in burns all the time and I can attest to the fact that it sucks. They probably won't let anyone go in and harvest the burnt trees while they have value and you will be cutting out massive ammounts of downfall every time the wind blows over 40 mph for the next 20 years. Not to mention the entire experience is deminished by the lack of living trees and complete exposure to the sun at all times. It will be just like riding desert but worse. We have so many trails that look like you are riding through a 3' wide tunnel lined by cut log ends on both sides to as high as 6-8'. Do not leave the trail.

That is what I was thinking, although I've never ridden in a burned area.

Latest map, which is much clearer - LINK

It appears in the lower left they may try to hold the fire at 17N14, but have a back up position

25,578 acres is the latest number :(
55% contained, with full containment not expected for another week.
1,664 personnel working on this fire.

90 miles of trails (comprising 2/3 of the trail system) have been affected. The way the fire is going, I'm not expecting to ride any trails at Stony for many years to come. The actual physical pain in my heart over this has been surprisingly acute. It's just...heartbreaking; that's all I can say...

Me too... I will save it for a campground evening discussion, but suffice it to say Stonyford was the reason I bought a Husqvarna in the first place. If Stony did not exist there would be no Cafe Husky, and I seriously doubt I would still be in California...

Over, possibly well over, 30,000 acres will be burned when it has finally been put out.

It appears they are clearing, by burning and other methods, Sullivan Ridge. East until it meets with Goat Mountain Road.
They also seem to be taking a backup position on Goat mountain southwest until it meets with M5... in case Sullivan Ridge cannot be held i.e. the Little Stony Creek valley would burn if Sullivan Ridge could not be held.

EDIT: This is interesting... if you right click on the yellow fire symbol on the google may here: LINK
This comment shows up: "IR heat perimeter", which sounds like a semi-real time thermal image. If so, that would explain why it keeps changing so often.

The real mess is when it rains after the burn and there's no vegetation to hold the top soil together and major erosion occurs. The public opinion will have to change and people will have to realize that they need to cut 1/2 to 2/3 of the trees to have a healthy stand and prevent a total loss in the event of fire. Dang hippie tree hugging crazies! :oldman:

I remember back when wild fires seemed to have swept all of the back country down here. More than 800,000 acres burned, turning day into almost night and depositing ash so thick that it collected in drifts along street curbs in some areas. Corral Canyon was burned, and then closed for about three years. luckily, it opened again in 2008. Now it looks pretty good.

It is always sad to see a beloved riding area burn, but at least it could be opened again. My heart get a lot more pained when I see roads and trails get decommissioned on public land. Once the gates get WELDED SHUT, it's OVER FOREVER! And I have seen that that happening all of a sudden, all around in my local national forests.
