  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TC Cams in SM Anyone done this?

I have trying to find some info about putting some different cams in my 510sm, but I have had no luck. I've heard about the rr cams, but I don't want to spend the money. I can get TC cams pretty cheap, used. What I want to know is if it is worth it? Any insight would be great.

I don't think the TC cams are any more aggressive than the SMR cams......I would imagine that the RR and TCX cams would be more aggressive though...

Most all the TE/tc/sm 450/510 motors are the same sometimes the Tc models use a very slightly lighter piston.

I've hear the TE and SMR use the same cams. The TC has slightly more aggressive cams than the TE/SMR. The SMRR uses more aggressive cams than the TC. Can't verify this, just what I've heard.

If you look at the parts catalog all TE,TC,TCX and SMR(450&510) for 2008 have the same parts number for intake and exhaust camshaft.

That settles it then. Now how much are the RR cams? I've also heard you need to respring the valves with rr cams.

New RR cam, (Intake cam is replaced, but not exhaust), is about $3xx if I remember right. Jeff from Hall's said it is best to use HD springs with the RR cam.. Not sure what brand he was talking about, Ill find out when I order mine up.

Husqvarna sells power kits for TC/TXC 510's that include a cam, stiffer springs, titanium shims and a heavy duty / racing cam chain tensioner.

That cam could very well be RR spec.

The prices in that pdf are in Euro's that we have to deal with. It'll most likely work out to be cheaper in the US as you pay less tax and parts seem to be cheaper in general ;)

Just a word of advice WRT a cam swap. Make sure the springs you use are rated for the lift of the cam. Modern cam springs are vodoo, and are designed to be on the edge of failing. Even a slight increase in valve lift can cause catastrophic failure in a very short time. Failures can be caused by fatigue, binding, or valve float. There's even a case of a bad batch of springs from a well known performance cam company that allegedly caused several very expensive engine failures. Do a search for "Comp 918 failure". The horror stories are endless. I know more than one person that has caused a lot of damage by not using proper springs when installing "big" cams.

Looks like no cam for me anyway. The kit from husky is to expensive. Might as well buy the 530 kit when I need a new top end. More bang for the buck.

In the long run, best bang for the buck. Spend the extra money for good mapping/fueling, the most gains are found there.

I agree that most gains are initially to be seen from sorting out the fuelling. Cams or big bore are open for debate as far as I'm concerned. If you want to utilise the most out of that extra displacement you cannot avoid upgrading the intake cam.

Extra displacement by itself will give you more torque throughout the rev range but not necessarily more horsepower.

Torque is good. As for the fueling. I have been playing with my pc settings for the last two months and as soon as I get a new tire I'm taking her to the dyno to see how I did with the a/f. Plus the temperature here is finally below 80. Maybe if I ask my wife nicely she'll let me spend the money on a rr cam. I'll post the dyno run when I get it done. I always like seeing other people's.

So the springs I ordered from Halls were R/D valve springs FYI... Havent got them yet but should in a week or so. When I do, Ill finally be able to put the engine together!
