    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

TE 510 over-heating?

Had a incident a couple of days ago and wanted to throw out a few questions.
At the end of a 4 hour ride I hit a shale rock hill which resulted in a half-spin out half walk up the hill event. When I finally got traction at the top and started to ride out of it the top connector hose between the radiators tore and exploded steaming coolant in my face. It didn't look like any came out of my reservoir. I was able (with help from a friend) to walk my bike out and only had to ride on it with low coolant for about 5 minutes.

Questions:
1. has anybody had issues with 09 510 TE's overheating. This happened late in the afternoon in about 70 degree weather and the fan was functioning.

2. When the 510 TE does overheat shouldn't it boil over into the reserve tank? Also shouldn't the radiator cap have a release before the hose blows?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm some what new to dirt bikes so any advice would be great. Thanks
 
The stock crossover hoses need to be removed and replaced with fuel injector hose. The Scott Summers article was a big help for me. You might have better luck then me and be able to reuse the stock clamps as you go. Get a coolant Y. I had to get a new section of hose as the stock straight piece going into the L rad was to short. The other 2 with the bends worked but it took some time to get it right. I used SS hose clamps on the Y and 5/16 clamps for the crossover. I found it is important to take your time with the fitting. You can't just screw some clamps on the Y, hook the lines back up and put the tank back on. Watch the clamp placement and new straight hose length (assuming you need to replace it) to make sure nothing is resting on the frame or rubbing on wires/plug and the plastic tank. The vibes these mighty TE's put out could turn a wayward clamp into a tank cutter.

I had bought a multi pack of various size vacume line plugs (from Kragens) for the removal of the smog canister. 1 of them fits perfect on the fuel pump elbow and 1 plugs the fuel line when the tank is off the bike.
 
The crossover hoses were supposed to be stronger on the newer (09?) bikes but they appear similar to my 2006 TE, which look like standard un-reinforced fuel line to me.

I took mine off, threw away the clamps because they appeared to be one use only and needed a special tool, then went to Auto Parts store and bought radiator hose & clamps of the proper size.

There have been a few reports regarding the crossover hose and I'm really confused why they are not putting a better hose on them when the problem has been well documented in the public domain for years - and hot coolant in the face is not a good thing.

Ah, those sucky crimp clamps. Best taken off (very carefully!!) with a junior hacksaw IMO - the little aluminium pipes on the rad won't take a lot of force. Likewise, wetting those pipes with a little coolant (or old fashioned spit) will help the new hose glide on easily.
 
Hey paramedicmeyer, Check with your dealer. It is already a recall from Husky. They replaced the hose with injection line and two heavier duty hose clamps. If you arent too far a way it will be free and under all warrenties. Malcolm smith is my closest and they were really good about notifying me about the recall and when the parts arrived. Also be carefull with the tee fitting on the radiator hoses. I already blew that as well. Get the uptite y fitting. It is aluminum instead of plastic and it is suppossed to let the bike run cooler in general.
