  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE450 Bike Rebuild (orignally "Lots of metal last oil change!")

So the bike is back together. I just feel like it is missing something...:p Anyone know why it won't fire?

George is waiting to get the cylinder back from the nickel plater and I "should" have the motor back tomorrow if everything goes well. This is cutting it close for my trip as I leave for a 6 day Baja ride to Cabo on the 22nd. George says I need to get 500 - 600 easy miles on the bike to break it in. I'll post more photos when its up and running!

Unless I missed something in this compelling saga, what did George actually find wrong with the motor and what are you/he doing to it?

Talked to George today. He confirmed it was the lower rod bearing that was going and that is what all the metal was. He's going to replace all the bearings as well as the oil pump. Also he found that the nut holding the impeller on the water pump had fallen off  He said that my piston and cylinder were toast, so he's sending the cylinder out to get plated, and I'm getting a new piston.

All in all it is going to be a brand new bike! I can't wait to get it all back together! I'm gong to try and get everything assembled this weekend, so I can drop the motor in as soon as I get it back from George.

You asked this before, and I posted the original quote. I guess you missed this twice? Are you asking another question that I didn't answer?

He is also installing a counter balancer, new main bearings and new intake valves.

-Blake

Do you know if he used the stock lower rod bearing or some type of upgraded replacement? I hear mention of one from a kawi or something that is supposed to be stronger :excuseme:

I'm not sure, and will ask, but I believe it was the stock lower rod bearing, but I know that for the main bearings he hates what Husky uses for stock and he has some way better French bearings that he is using.

Good post...wish I could see the pictures. When it's all together let's meet at Killarneys for beer.

You can't see the photos? I can, can everyone else?

I'd love to meet you and grab a beer at Killarneys sometime.

George is getting the cylinder Monday, so I should get the motor back Tuesday evening. I need to put on 100 easy street miles, change the oil, and check the valves before Saturday. I'm planning on getting 300 or so easy dirt miles in on Saturday/Sunday. Then packing on Sunday for my 6 day ride to Cabo that I leave for on Monday. This is cutting it kinda close. I'll have to baby the motor the first couple days until I get down as far as Bay of LA, then it should be good to go! Getting kinda stressed!

I can see the pics just fine, some work environments block certain picture hosting sites, that would be my initial guess.

Yes I can tell you are stressed. Best of luck with the bike!

Sorry BCVisin, I did miss what was being replaced, as said this has been an excellent run down on the whole project. Good luck with the tight time line.

Just talked to George and he is putting the motor back together as I type. He said it'll be done either later tonight or early tomorrow. He said he'd call me later if he thinks its going to be done tonight so I can drive up there to pick it up. I'm also picking up a spare stator, flywheel, and BD Diablo HID from socaltrailrider who lives by George's shop. I'll take pictures of re-assembly and hopefully I'll get the bike fired up tonight or tomorrow!

I also put the stock 1/4 throttle stop back in the carb for the break in period. I don't want to be tempted to open her up, so I figure this will force me to be nice to her.

Well guys, my bike is running****************************************! It's a little after 3AM and I am going to bed. I went to George's shop at 5 to pick it up and he was just finishing it up. BUT there is never a quick in and out at George's shop and that's what I love about it! I ended up leaving there a little after 8. As I was heading home there was a car fire or something that closed the 91, and I was stopped in traffic. Finally I got to an off ramp, turned around and headed south on the 5 to Ortega Hwy. I ended up home around 12 and just couldn't wait till tomorrow to get the motor in and see if she fires. Well after 3 hours of installation, it fired right up!

I got all the direction on how to heat cycle and break in the bike from George. I have the stock 1/4 throttle stop in it for the first few hundred miles so I don't over rev the engine. Cant wait to get on her tomorrow night for a little ride. It's been a long time!

Photos tomorrow of the install. I gotta get some sleep.

-Blake

Phew, this has been a saga for you, but now you really have a brand new bike again. Hope she performs to expectations.

The end....?

So I have everything back together and done 4 heat cycles today and took it for a slow easy ride around the block. I'm going to take it for a ride tomorrow and put on 70 - 90 miles. Easy street ride.

Here are the photos of the final bike:
