  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE450 what are they like?

Sounds like a dumb question, but I'm thinking of selling my 310 and getting an 09 450 and I've not tried one.
I have tried sohc ktm 400 and 450, and a dohc TM 450.
What I'm after is the lazy single gear through the tight stuff type power of the KTM's rather than the mental mx'er type power of the TM.
I love the 310 but find the gears are'nt long enough in the tight stuff, if that makes sense:confused:

Not sure that the stock power delivery is what you are looking for. Maybe you can find somebody with one and get a ride on it. Definitely not like a KTM powerband.

The KTM and Huskies take a slightly different approach to gearing, the TE is a close ratio box that I love in the bush, especially the tight ST stuff that I do most of. The KTM is a wider ratio box that still goes well in the bush and is definately better on the tarmac. So I guess it depends on where you really want to focus the bulk of your riding. TM's are great bikes with top notch kit. They are more expensive than KTM which in turn are more expensive than Husky. Personally I feel dollar for dollar the Husky is exceptional value when considering its quality etc. If you can get to ride a example of each. In reality they are all good machines, with slightly differing approaches and nuances.

The ktm's have a much longer stroke then the huskys do. The ktm make alot more useable power down low then the huskys do. Huskys are a top end running type of motor.

An autoclutch may help you out in that tight stuff and be cheaper than buying another bike. The 450/510 do have nice fat low end torque that you can lug way down, but getting the things to turn in tighter single track just drains your energy quicker. I went from 510 to 250 and find it much more forgiving in the woods. If you're a veteran rider, you may be able to overcome the energy usage with experience like I see a lot of people here do.

I should of mentioned I do mostly tight woodland 4 hour hare and hound enduros.
Nice to hear that KTM's and Huskys have different ratio gearbox's and I'm not just imagineing it.
ioneater, do you mean a rekluse clutch? I had not thought of that.
The coment about getting better is probably close to the truth:D
Thanks for the advice:cheers:

The older KTM.s had longer stroking motors (still their best engines for st). The newer ones are really the revvy SX motors with a leg and a few changes. I ride an 09 450 EXC a lot. I find the power delivery of the Husky far superior in the tight and on steep hills. The bottom end is good with arguably the best mid of any 450. The key factor here is the gearing. If you get caught in the wrong gear in a husky you can feather and lug the bike better than being wrong footed on a KTM.

Yes sir, I'm talking about the Rekluse or similar type of autoclutch mechanism that lets you ride it like it's a crf50. You can keep it a gear high and let the clutch work its magic after adjusting how hard and what rpm range it fully engages. Pretty slick piece of work to help relieve the clutching hand. Nice thing about it is that you can use the clutch lever like normal if you so desire.

Thanks ghte, thats answers my question.
Ioneater, the rekluse sounds like cheating, especially when the rear brake is on the handlebars:lol:
Good idea though.
