• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I am now working with a designer/buddy on a PDF, for a flyer and t-shirts, to attract sponsors and announce the trip and to send to Husky dealers, magazines, fellow Husky fanatics, the mothership, etc.

Once the icon/design for the flyer and shirts is done, i will announce it.
I figure in 7-10 days. Its June. :)

Cant come up with a clever name for the trip. Right now its 'Tour de Baja de Husqvarna'

I want to take it up a notch or two from previous Husky baja rides. Make it an annual trip/event.

I will start a new thread on here and make it a clear cut announcement.

6 months advance plane tickets would be before June 26th to Orange county (for you folks in Italy!!) and July 3rd for those returning from Cabo.
 
Name suggestion

Since it's on the Baja 1000 course, why not use the Italian (Husqvarna nation of manufacture) word for 1000?

Call it the Husqvarna Mille

Hey, Mike...with the flyers, shirts, magazines, etc., do you think it will remain a 10-12 rider event?

I'm trying really really hard to be one of those 10-12 riders.

Hey Mike, do you have any idea what the nearest airport is at the final destination? Just trying to see if I can work out some details to where I might be able to make this possible.:cheers:
 
WC i think we should keep it relatively small first time all the way to Cabo. I am very curious to find out 'who' is going, meaning what kind of bikes--610's vs. the smaller bikes. While i would be comfortable with 20 610's, i wouldnt want more than 10-12 450's.

The reason being the type of course.

But ultimately its all about how many we can trailer back, and i dont see how we can grow much past a dozen, maybe 1-2 more.

Next year we can schedule a trucking company to take back more bikes, the way Malcolm and 1-2 others do on their big rides.

You want to fly home from Los Cabos International, which is in the town of San Jose. Its about 30 miles (a cheap taxi ride) from Cabo San Lucas. San Jose and Cabo are now sort of merged together sister cities with high end developements all along the nice freeway that connects them.

For those of you who know the north of Baja, but not the cape regions, its big time culture shock. Think Cancun or Ft. Lauderdale or something. We can ride our dirt bikes up to an Applebees and have a slice of apple pie. Sadly.

That's what Cancun reminded me of...kind of a Las Vegas but with beaches instead of casinos. It has Domino's Pizza, Baskin-Robbins, etc....and they all want your dollar bills. Blech... It's like Mexico Lite...for people that want to go Mexico but are afraid to go to Mexico.

I like apple pie, though :D

P.S. is it still there??? I haven't been down in Los Cabo's since 2000

I guess you are just gonna have to get out here and ride down there and find out. :thumbsup:
 
I dunno if I'm too noob to participate in this. I've never ridden with any of yous. but I'm in if you'll have me. I've been to Baja once before if that helps at all.

Its open to everyone who rides a Husky. If Sheryl Crow wants to borrow a Husky and join the ride, she can.

We arent exclusive. And not a 'clique' or anything.

For guys like yourself who are new to the community/havent ridden with us before, its probably best to do some PM's and flush it all out.
Ive done that with a couple guys already. Just to make sure guys arent bringing 125 2-stroke 'motards or whatever. :thumbsup:
 
what an awesome idea Mike!!! If the economy, the auto industry, (ie. my walet) doesn't tank any further, this east coaster is in.

I know knowing the "commited" :p # is imperitive, so sorry I can't commit right now. I'd have to see how the end of the summer goes for me and how much work I get. If there's still a spot though and I have a few nickels left to rub together I'm there !!.
And as last trip, I'd be towing the 610 behind the Subbie from Connecticut to SoCal, so I could possibley help someone along the way get themselves and their bike to SoCal..

Time for me to go scare up some work for myself....

No Motard for me, I was thinking I'd take my Husky zero turn radius mower :thinking: That cacti don't stand a chance! I might have to put bigger knobbies on it for sand though:excuseme:

I'm going on the ride and I am in Omaha. My trailer is a single and I only have a small SUV, so I do have the option of trailering my bike to SoCal but am unable to take more bikes.

If it works out for you, and you are able to make the ride, perhaps we could work something out with you coming through. Share some trip costs, etc.

Anyhow, something to keep in mind. I hope you are able to make the trip.

No real progress to report. Except i got a job. :thumbsup:

Back in the day i organized Baja rides on TT. We used to support charities, especially an orphanage in Baja. We raised over $10k, and several 'charity' events spun off as a result.

Im thinking about doing something similar with this event, and in each year going forward--

Heres the idea:

The Husqvarna Gate. A new landmark in the heart of the northern baja trails, and on the race course. It would be a huge cattle guard with big pillars and an arch over it with the gunsite, red and white of course. It would be built so guys could jump it during the races (nice photos?) All to replace one of the main barbed wire gates often left open by riders--that has lead to anger from the ranchers. Im thinking about hitting up sponsosrs/mothership to help fund it. I figure cost will be $2500.
Its a good idea thats been around for a few years, but never really implemented the way it could be. Maybe hit up everyone on this ride, ($100 each?) and ask spsonsors to match what we raise? What do you think?

Other updates: I expect the flyer will be ready in a few days. I talked to the designer again on Sat.


Right now the Husky Baja Mille (and this ride isnt even official yet) has 12 riders and 3 sponsors....

Just got back from a 3 day run. Tecate-San Felipe-Mikes-Tecate. Federales everywhere doing stops and searchs (8 total for the 3 days) but all with good attitudes and actually made me feel pretty safe down there.

Sorry, didnt mean it to be a Hi-jack but thought if anyone is reading this thread and worrying about safety in Baja,,, dont.

(EDIT) Mexican Army, not Federales.
