How to Set Up a Windows XP Virtual Machine for Free (helpdeskgeek.com)
I have done it and it works.
The "upgrade package" is called Guest Additions and you definitely need that. If you don't have an old copy of Win XP and a serial number, this method is far better than the method I described before with VMWare. It does take a little more setup, but extracting the VHD from the windows download is the way to go.
Note I ran the VMware method on Win 10 and the WinXPMode and Virtual Box method on Win 11. Both work great.
