  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Tell us more.... what type of riding are you going to do?...what do you weight? ...... is being street legal important? ... is price a factor? If you like the WR but just want more power then a WR250/300 might do the trick (or a 144 kit).

okay i ride enduro not extreme but hard it need to be easy to handle. i weight like 90 kg ( 198 pounds if im correct) street legal is not necessery. not to expensive i dont want it to be older than 2006 modell. i dont really like 2 stroke i know they are easier to ride in the wood but i think im gonna switch to 4 stroke

That's 6'3", 198lbs.

Why is it you don't like 2-stroke? They are way simpler to maintain and provide more bang for your buck (performance).

A 4-stroke opens up all kinds of issues with maintenance, particularly with an older bike. I hear the 144 kit is a woods machine. The 250/310 4T's are just a bit heavier, 450/510 quite a bit heavier. For really tight trails the lighter bike is an advantage. WR300 is a weapon.

Where are you located? Looks like English is a second language and you're all metrics (just curious). That's what I like about cafehusky - it's international!

I like my 310 I am 255 lbs, 18.5 stone or 118 kgs. It has real grunt for ST stuff and is perfect for me. If I were to do more fire trail then the 449/460 would be my ride

hmm i got a lot of thinking going on now, and yes english is second language im from sweden :) i was thinking getting a te 250 first but i think its to little power i know 2 stroke is way easier but something tells me i need a 4 stroke 144 kit sounds little small. the wr 300 sounds like a good bike so if i change my mind i think thats what i buy. i have never driven anywhere else than sweden but i can just say that swedens woods are cliffs stones and just hard so i think 2 stroke will be a little tricky. what about te 450 is it good?

Johannes, at 192cm and 90kgs I'd say a 450, I am biased as I ride a 2010 TE450. But I would seriously consider the biggest cubic capacity you can physically handle, be it either a 2 stroker or 4 stroker.

Biggest CC's is not best for tight single track trail riding, rocky, steps, switchbacks. Lightweight is best. You rarely get out of 3rd gear with this type of riding and you generally don't use the top end power of any bike. A 450 is not faster than a 250 in the woods, nor is it easier to ride. A 300 2-stroke tuned for low end power also makes a wonderful trail machine. Husky and GasGas are the only two I'm aware of. The GG is an excellent trail machine.

That's why Johannes has to analyze his riding style and choose accordingly. Size of rider is some consideration of course. A bigger guy will generally prefer a bit more power and they generally have greater body strength to handle a larger bike's weight.

Moving up from a 125 and wanting a 4-stroke I would also recommend the 310. It has the weight of the 250 with a little more punch, and quite a bit more than the 125. If there is any higher speed riding or dirt roads and open trails, then definitely the 450/449, even a 510/511.

I have a 250 KTM 4-stroke, and a new TE630. The former for tight single track and general offroading, the latter for dualsporting, road work, dirt roads, and camping.

I'm 5-10 175lbs and the 250 is perfect. But then I'm over 50 and not as aggressive of a rider as I was 10 years ago. The 250 is light, good power, easy to ride. Will probably put a 300 big bore kit on it next time the top end is due. After a couple of years with it I'm ready for a little more punch. I don't have any trouble keeping up with anybody on tight single track, regardless of bike type, their size, or their age. In fact, my 40 years of experience usually comes in to play, easily transcending any youthful exuberance. Reminds me of my favorite sayings, "Age and wisdom always wins over youth and treachery." If I was to replace my 250 with a husky it would be a TE310, hands down. I rode one recently, it's light, punchy, and an outstanding trail machine.

Some years ago I was out with a new group and had my trials bike with me. It was a vintage Fantic Trials, some 200cc or so. One of the guys in the group had a brand new Husaberg 600 and was all bragging about how badass his bike was. The area we rode had a steep 3 mile trail up a mountain, about 3000 foot gain with switchbacks, steps, and obstacles. I got tired of listening to him so I told him my trials bike could beat him up the mountain. He got so pissed off he wanted to bet me. This was drunken campfire talk of course.

So next morning we got to the trailhead and I said go ahead, since he obviously thought he was so much faster. It was lightly raining and pretty windy on top. I did not have any trouble tailing him by a few feet and imagine his surprise when he crested the top of the mountain and there I was on my little trials bike right behind him. He was so pissed off he never spoke to me again. Sore loser.

Moral of the story, it's not the CC's its the rider and how their bike is setup.
