• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

the 630 is more dirt worthy and the TR650 is more street worthy.

The tr is a strada model sorry I forgot to say..... Thinking the strada might be a better long distance bike yet still have some gravel road exploring abilty...I would keep the 630 for more local backwoods work. Still not sure if they are to close to the same to warrant having both in the garage.....???

--I don't have a 630 but they're not that different from my 610--

I have a very dirty SM610 in my garage that sees a lot of dual sport action and rippin' paved goat trail-ish road riding, and I have a Terra 650 as my daily commuter/adventure/2-up machine. I couldn't be happier with both. They're very different. I feel like I could ride across the country tomorrow on the 650, on dirt or super slab, and be comfortable. I also feel like I can throw my 610 on singletrack and be happy, albeit very tired at the end of the day. The 650 is very smooth, comfortable, quiet and civilized. Private school refinement, if you will. My 610 is loud and raw and visceral and capable...an incorrigible reform school bad boy that stole my heart and has never failed to put a smile on my face.
I hope that helps :D

Heck Woodsie you should write books or something.
Hi gang been off line a while with a broken computer. But back now worse than ever.

Great answer!!! I too have my 630 set up as a offroad/ gravel road weapon. I have done 500 miles in a day on blacktop with it, twice. But I'm thinking I could set up the strada with tkc tires etc. and do multi state adv. type riding much better than the 630.
Thanks for the reply its what I was looking for...

I have a Strada which I have made into the Terra as its better looking, but the road manners is like a supermoto well nearly. But tha advantages is that they can be ridden on dust tracks OK.
For long distance with a different seat can be ridden for miles and can cruise at 80 mph no problem, with a great return on mpg. No brainer for me but I don,t have the luxury of dirt roads to rome onto in the UK.

I found a very local road yesterday that has really fun semi-twisties then turns into a gravel road. The Strada is pretty good on the tar. Big front wheel is a bit of a pain once you get some speed or really tight corners, but still fun. On the dirt it moves around a lot. The dual surface tyres aren't... Still, no arse clenching moments. Front is skatey, rear vague. Wrong suspension, tyres and weight. Having said that I would be prepred to dirt road tour it, especially if there is more bitumen than dirt. Wouldn't like to have these tyres in wet dirt or mud though. Too much slick not enough gap.

I have both, and intend on keeping them. Very different bikes, mainly because of suspension and weight differences. The TR has done everything I've asked of it, but then I wouldn't ask it to do some of the things the 630 would. Basicly the TR will do anything a KLR will, but better. It's a road going dual sport. The 630 is quite happy on the road too, and I think, just as smooth, but it will require a bit more maintenance. It is also a lot more capable when the going gets rough and steep.

For the COBDR this summer, the TR was just fine. It would have been the perfect ride for Heart of the West (over on ADVrider) recause there was a lot of pavement, but at the time I didn't have the TR and used the TE instead. 2500 miles and the TE never complained at all, and neither did I.

For something like the Trans America Trail or Continental Divide Ride, I would probably pick the TE630 just because it's a bit easier to pick up, and there are just a few spots where that might happen, depending on how bad the trail suffered during the winter and spring. The TE is better in sand too, mainly due to less weight. The TR would do it just fine, but would be more work.

For more difficult stuff, or where I had no idea what I was getting into, I would use my Yamaha WR250R, hands down. Can't go as fast, but it will go with much less effort than with a larger bike.

Sorry for being long winded, but these bikes are all different, and it is nice to have the option to pick the appropriate weapon.

Weight defines uses ever. But if you want a bike for everything, TR650 now, and KLR650 before, are the best choise.
