• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What boots?

There are so many boots to choose from. I've been wearing my roadracing boots and its time to get some real dirt ones. The last pair I bought was about 10 years ago lol. Thankfully there are a lot of options now with some I don't know anything about. I haven't heard of anything about gaerne. Anyway just give me some opinions on the brands. Appreciate it. Reply quick for my sake because when I get an idea I tend to just do it lol

Sidi Chargers.... MTB, road shoes, road racing and dirt. I know my size and they always fit and wear for years. The Chargers were not as inexpensive as some but I could confidently order 45 and depend on a quality product.

All the major brands are good, (Italian built ones) .

Gaerne (SG10 I used) are great, http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/-/439/712/-/28865/Gaerne-SG-10-Boots

, Sidi, great, lower toe cap best for me, these are what I use now,

A-Stars (tech8s) great as well I used these for many years

those are all the brands I've ever used. Lots more to choose from. All 3 three of those brands all fit well and supported well. You wil need to get pedal feel adjusted with new MX type boots, this takes a bit of acclimation. You will ride harder and longer with good mx boots they absord lots of hit energy. Also note- go out to the sporting goods store and buy some hi performance/hi impact sports in soles. Your boots will feel much better and sneaker like and give even more support and shock absorbtion .

Sidi CrossFire TA are my current choice, these boots are super great in all conditions, the SRS seemed too stiff/hard soled for me.

I wear Alpinestars Tech 10s. I like them because they have an inner bootie that you can remove when washing your boots so they don't get soaked (and you can wash the bootie in the washing machine). They are all-day comfortable and feel almost tennis-shoe-like, except much more rigid, of course. The ankle has interchangable plastic pieces which you can use to make the boots more or less rigid in the ankle area. I also like that they are very good about keeping water out (they have a rubber seal at the top) and I have even stood in a stream for a short time without water getting in. I've had them for about 3 years and the soles are still fine and the buckles still operate smoothly. My complaint about the Tech 10s would be that they do not have much in the way of traction as they do not have a lug sole. They are not good for climbing up a slimy hill to help another rider and can be slippery on worn pegs. I now have Fastway F3 pegs, so that is not a problem anymore. The soles are replaceable, but you have to take them to a cobbler.

We just bought my husband some Sidi Crossfire SRs. They are Sidi's top-o-the-line boot and look to be very nice (just came in yesterday. My husband says the sizing is WAY off. He wears a 10.5 US and the Sidi chart says that should be somewhere between 44 and 45...closer to 45. He ended up getting a 46 which was on the tight side for him, and supposedly equal to 11.5 US. We can't really comment on the function yet as he just got them, but many seem to swear by them. We got ours here on killer closeout (don't match the Husky, but for the price...who cares. haha).

Prior to these nice boots, we both had Alpinestars Tech 3s. Unless you're looking to go cheap, I wouldn't recommend them. While durable, the buckles are crappy compared to the Tech 10 and become hard to operate in short order. Also, they really aren't all that supportive. I wore my Tech 3s one time because my Tech 10s got soaked on a ride and decided I would rather wear soaked Tech 10s then stick my feet back in the Tech 3s. They felt so unsupportive that I was nervous while riding. I never noticed it until I owned better boots.

I like the Gaerne boots. No bootie system, hinged ankles, buckles are well made and easy to handle, calf size is adjustable, very comfortable and practically no break in.

Yeah the sidi street boots I have ran really small too. Basically this is all of what I expected. I'll be trying them on rather then Internet shopping. So atleast I have some brands in mind. Interested in the gaerne because that wasn't a brand I remember. I think my last pair was alpine star M6 which was more offroadish then mx. Thanks for the quick replies!

I'm not looking to spend 500 for now. Maybe my next set. I'll stay around 300. Really I don't feel comfortable at all in my roadracing boots. I'm just to nervous to have much fun at all.

I got some SG10's from Rocky Mountain for $275 shipped with a 10% off code, which I got from Thumpertalk. There's a TT coupon 'pay it forward' thread in the General section and that's where I got it from.

The SG10's are nice. Wasn't sure at first as they're heavy and bulky, but after a few rides I really like them. I had Oxtar TCX's before these and I liked them as well... especially since they were $100 new.

Those look like the ones for you.... I got my SG-10 for 309.00 shipped, that's a smoking good deal from RMATV

Pretty set on the Gaerne 10's. Do the sizes run with sneaker size? I really don't like buying stuff like this online but I seem out of luck with dealers in stock inventory...anyone notice if our site sponsors carry these?

People claim Gearne's are sized slightly small, but that's not my experience. I wear 11.5 sneakers and bought size 12 boots and they're slightly on the big side. I wish I had gotten 11's instead and dealt with a tight boot until they broke in properly.

No regrets on the boots though. They are well made, comfortable, good waterproofing and seem like they're going to last a long time.

I'm A big fan of the SIDI CROSSFIRE boots, not the sole replacement type for me the sole replacement makes the slipper feel too rigid and I can't feel the petals.

+1 for Gearne, getting ready to send my SG10s off for sole replacement. Also have a pair of Oxtar TCXs, great boots but they squeak when I walk. May try the boots from Husky next, the price isn't ridiculous compared to other good boots.......they are a little gaudy though, haha

I have Gaerne SG-12's now and they are great, very comfy. My last boots was the Sidi Crossfires's, also a great boot, I think the Sidis fit my foot a little better (somewhat narrow) and had a smaller toe box which made shifting easier. I've had a lot of different boots but IMO the top 2 are Sidi and Gaerne.

SG12's, Gaernes are sweet. As close to zero break-in as you can get, first time I wore mine was for an enduro. The fit is pretty true, I wear 10.5w in boots and 11w in shoes and wear 11 in SG12s. I had a pair of tech 8s and they did not suit me at all, not very flexible and didn't feel as sturdy as the Gaernes.

I switched/upgrade last year to SIDI crosfires (best boots I ever had so far) I am really pleased with them

Tip: don't buy them on the size nr system but fit them as they can be a bit tight comparing with the same nr of other brands.
