• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

WRX400?

ill bet its totally seized from some dumbass forgetting to put hoil in the peterhol...or if your luck is still holding from actually finding that scoot, the kicker will have let go and the pawl is jammed in the clutch gear needing simple removing and rebuilding the kicker.....my $$$ is on scenario 1.

go ahead;) ..pull that cover off:( ...make my day!!

Hopefully my luck is holding out, but I'm not confident! I think this will require some serious disassembly.
I may not get to strip it down for a day or two, but I'm busting to see what's going on inside too.....
Looking through the oil filler hole, all looks great, I suspect water damage or as you mentioned, lack of lubrication.

ol mate bought a twin shocker 15 years or so ago and the PO said "was running fine till i stopped at the lights"then it stalled and i couldn't start it..i think the kickstarter is jammed":( .... that actually meant i forgot to put oil in the fuel and its totally seized":banghead:

Well some questions have been answered, first answer is that my luck ran out to a degree.
Cylinder came off very easily, here's why.......IMG_2193.JPG

The rest of the bad news is obvious.....

its a WRX for sure. has all the tell tale signs. DLS brake and swingarm mount brake strap. not slotted like 86WR.

Some PO handywork!

It must have been too much trouble to weld the broken subframe tab, just use wire instead.

long term project there....give mick a call, he might have a bottom end he can sell you...although claude would have that running by the weekend....

The good news is the cases are not rotted, the sleeves are tight, the transmission looks very good, as does the clutch, barely any wear on the plates or the actuator shaft.

I'll strip the cases of all bearings completely and probably bead blast them and then I need to assess the crank, before making a decision, it will depend on how it cleans up, if it looks good after blasting it will get a rod kit, if not then a replacement will be sourced.

Then there's the top end, it's had a sieze at some point as Surprize predicted, then it seems it was left in the weather.

The frame will be the easy part, make any weld repairs, sandblast and powdercoat.
The plastics will need some elbow grease but will look good when finished.

The rear shock has good damping but will get a rebuild anyway, the forks are in good condition below the triple clamps, might get them re-chromed anyway.

There are indications that this was competed on at some stage with paint marks on rims etc, and that it hasn't actually done a lot of miles, but it only takes one idiot to mess up a good bike, my guess is the last owner had no idea.
Tony.

the last owner had no idea....id say he did....took one look at the price of a mahle piston and a rod kit then after getting out of ICU....pushed it out the back.
Was like two months wages back then on what was a 1500 dollar bike! its frustrating that for ten mins work he could have buttoned the top end back down and left it tight.

at least you have a good stock to work with. the crank wheels may come up nice with a blast and a new rod kit will sort it out. the bore may be std and you just need a bore... im trying to be positive here....;)

good lord...yeah you will find that sometimes..no signs of mouse urine? hopefully the cases survived?

No mouse urine, the cases looked good until I pressed the bearings out, then the mating surfaces just crumbled.
One thing I've never seen before, tide marks on the rod!
This engine has 2021 as the prefix, but according to the chart here http://www.husqvarna-parts.com/page/page/3895714.htm it should start with 2022, it says that 2021 is a 1972/73 CR450, obviously it's not though, anyone else here have a 400WRX with that prefix?
Tony.

check that case no carefully tony, sometimes the punching is very poor....tide marks... i love it.:D
