84 CR250 Issues?

    This may be my first post in the Vintage area of Cafe Husky....though Im a regular over in the 4 stroke area....

    Anyway, I came across a cheap running 84 CR250. Its pretty much all there and what isnt is available. Anything in particular to look for on this 'early adopter' of watercooling?

    I do see that it is an oddball for Vintage racing since its pre linkage, drum brakes, but water cooled...which means if I race it I get smoked by lots of more modern machinery....but that happens to me now on my TXC511, so we cant really blame the bike :)

    Any thoughts you guys can share are appreciated.

    Yeah...get an 83 cylider (AC) and convert it so you can race post vintage grad prix class and not post vintage ultima. That way your 83 250 will go against 81 KX, 81 RM, 81 YZ and 80 CR!

    The good the 84 250CR, i read has some wild porting, compared to the 83 cylinder as Joe suggested.. The possible bad ..alot of the watercooled bikes weren't not maintained well & the dis similar metals of the water pump, side cases etc, can cause the cases to rot out from the inside.. You can check this out by looking for any externals leaks, milky crank case oil or of course removing the water pump cover & actually checking for any damage...

    Not sure about racing the Grand Prix class though, as i always race in the Ultima class with my 83 250's Husky..

    Would be a good project for you. As stated check clutch cover case for rot. If u need one, I think I know where a brand new ones is.

    The TM125 is apart at the moment, and it may stay that way....I used to race one when it was new :) but Im not sure this one is worth salvaging.

    And thanks for the lead on the case.

    The main issue was the water pump /clutch cover from new was magnesium and coolant loved it., Husky made an aluminium cover to replace it and you may find it has one of these. if the cover is poohed, there may be coolant in the gearbox.
    HVA make a billet case to solve this issue.

    The swing arm pivot can wear in the back of the engine holes so have a look for elongation there.

    everything else is a simple fix.

    As above, get an a/c cyl and you get two bikes for the price of 1

    Or You can install the 84 WR Cylinder. Its Air Cooled and as near as I can tell it has the same Port Configuration as the CR. Biggest diffrence is the Exhaust is not in the Center, wich will probaby cause a Pipe Frame issue.
    Besides the water pump Rot issues it might have main case Rot issues as well, water cooled or not. Start by looking at the bottom of the Engine below the Crank at the Split, if there is any sign of corosion there You can figure the Cases are shot. If thats OK Turn the Engine over and try to tell what condition the Bearings are in. If they are good then your off to a good start. Although the only way to know for sure is to open things up.

    If you are going air cooled get a 82 - 84 cylinder . You will need a 83-85 air cooled frame and 83-84 pipe also . You will need to build a plate to block where the water pump is on the clutch cover also or find a air cooled clutch cover. If this were my bike keep it water cooled if it is worth saving its a one year bike . Post us some pictures of your bike that way us members maybe able to help you better. On this site in the pictures part look up page 13 there is a great looking 1984 CR250 bike !

    Im going to give it the final review this evening....no corrosion visible behind the water pump housing. No noises when turning it over. I will take a look at the bottom of the case...

    Someone stop me before its too late ....:eek:

    I see a couple of left coast guys here (Yakima, Seattle).....Vintage races in Elkton, OR next weekend using parts of the Funky Chicken grass track. You guys going to be there?

    This is true....not a problem.

    Spent most of last night removing the 3 layers of paint from the gas tank....just because that was too ugly to ignore. Someone went amuck with black spray paint so pretty much everything should get stripped and cleaned and refinished, but much of that can wait. Brakes, tires, cables .... time to make it rideable now!

    BMP Bill and I rummaged through his salvage stash and found a few useful bits..if I want to go air cooled he has frames for that, too.

    good starting point , u don't see alot of these, cosmetic stuff is easy & the quickest way to turn a turd into a cool bike..
