• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1987 430 barn find. Need some help.

yeah,,, but,,,,
MOOOORE :D
if you want to wake up the full potential knife port and work on the transfer ports, better transition to a VERY powerful midrange

Polish the exhaust port too wake up the sleeping giant. We can always throttle back on the twistie if we don't need the power. But it's nice to have the extra power when needed.

I started to put back on my new clutch cover. I had a hell of a time with it today. It would not line up were the pin comes out of the cover just below were the shiffter shaft fits in. Is there some trick to this? I thought maybe it was the case not fitting right but the old one has the same problem to. the shifting mechanism looks like it sits just under the pin, is there a special alignment I need to do before popping on the cover. I cant figure this one out.

It seems the pin coming off the cover sits right in the middle of the spring for the shifting mechanism. or on one side of it. I just cant get the case to sit flush. IDK what the hell is up.

messed around with it some more. I watched some of huskydogg's videos. I found if the kick starter shaft is not in the case goes on ok. On closer examination of my kick shaft it is not straight. I am ordering a new one. I did install a steel bushing in th inner case also for the shaft to ride in. If i need i can hone that a bit to. I found out that some of the hva cases can be off on their machining. I am hoping the new shaft and a clean up of my new bushing will be the fix. If not ill be hunting a new cover, hopefully hva will take this one back if it is off to much.

Did you have to bore out the case before you installed the new sleeve you fabricated for the idler gear (starter) shaft? If so, the previous wear may have caused it to come out slightly off of the true center of the original machined hole. Then the idler gear (starter) shaft being slightly off center might cause the cover alignment dowel to not drop into the recessed hole.

Yes I did. it was badly chewed up on tear down. That is a fear I am having. Since I know my shaft is bent. I am ordering A new one and take it from there. If its still tight, Ill hone my sleeve a bit. After that if I cant make it work its a whole tear down and new half case. I just did not want to tear this bike down untill my 500 is done.

Is it really common that the hva cases have fitment problems? huskydogg had a few youtube videos showing this problem. Not sure that is my problem, I just ordered a new kick start shaft. I going to narrow it down and find out. However im just wondering how common of a problem this is? Also if anyone knows of anyone with a decent case for a 87 430wr just in case it is my case.....

the fitment problem would be unusual for original husky parts. ive swapped alot of mixed year parts and they fit fine.

I have numerous 87 430 engines in parts, if you need to try fitment you are more than welcome to take advantage of this

pin goes to the middle for shifter return both ways
Damn, had the cover off of my '86 today, was having same trouble getting it back on and shifted the spring to the side to get it past the pin. I wonder if I can find enough garage time to fix it tomorrow...

Thanks 2premo, I will let you know as soon as I narrow down my problem. Waiting on my kick starter shaft is all now.

feel your pain on the cover
here is my thoughts on this
when an assembly won't work go back to basics
pull the shifter and kicker
make sure the cover fits all by itself, if not fix this if so go to step 2
step 2; put the kicker in the main case, make sure everything aligns, check clearances, should be snug but not bind
put the kicker in the clutch cover, set the spring preload, place cover see if all fits, if not work on this, if it does go to step 3
step 3; see if shifter engages and spring goes over pin, check for binding

Yes , I know mine is an 81 430 but want to share this anyway . Last couple of clutch cover gaskets I bought had an additional tab with a hole that lines up with the pin for the shift return . I found that if I used that tab to line up the inside of the shifter return spring , no problems .

I have the same gasket, that's what showed me my spring was in the way, and preventing that corner of the case from going flush. Still not sure what idiocy caused me to push it to the side rather than straddle. While that was dumb, at-least I didn't resort to 'hammer therapy' (rarely do on these old bikes).

Adding to 2-premo's comment. This is obvious, and I just admitted to idiocy, so I'm sure you're already there, when you put the cover on minus the kicker shaft, that's also a good point to find something reasonably matching the diameter of the kicker shaft to test the alignment on your bushing setup.
