• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Aftermarket air filter

It has been pretty dusty lately & I've just pulled the Uni Filter.

I used silicone to secure the filter to the bracket & red grease all over the place to trap the dust. A little bit of dust came over the top however so it's time to investigate options.

I've played around with some ali angle but it appears to be a difficult task to add another flange in a way that I can be sure won't interfere with the air filter or its housing. I think I might spend tomorrow playing around with a couple of ideas.

Chuffa, thanks for these enlightening pictures.

My DNA filter with oil kit ($117) is on the way.

What I was looking at yesterday is instead of mounting in the original holder, turn the filter around and mate it to the other side of the airbox. This will take some airbox modification, but looks to be enough room, and then make a clamping seal for the filter. I will take pictures when the filter arrives.

I will still most likely use a prefiter element if I can make this work.

Well I found a reply from DNA filters in my email that I must have overlooked.

I'm still going ahead with my mods, but for those who do not wish to mod the airbox you will be happy to know they are developing one specifically for the Terra.

Dear Dave,
Thank you for contacting us.
The BMW air filter is not correct for the Terra and must NOT be used!
The Terra air filter is a “slide in” design and definitely needs a soft sealing surface to seal properly.
Currently we have this bike in our R&D, the filter has being designed by our engineers and in 2 to 3 weeks we will have the first working samples.
We expect to release this New DNA filter just before Christmas, I will keep you updated and send you photos of the first prototypes.

I hope my answer helped,

We will keep in touch,

Best regards,

I think one of the culprits in dust getting by the filter might be this seal based on the dust trails inside the outer portion of my air box. I've only got 140 miles on the bike now but I trailed a friend in dusty conditions on Thursday. No dust on the down stream side of the filter (I siliconed the filter into place) but the outer box showed dust infiltration adjacent to the seal shown below.

The last air filter change I played with a couple of ideas. The simplest I could work out involved stuffing a spare rectangular foam air filter into the air box intake to reduce the dust at the top of the air filter. I am hoping it acts as a fourth flange to the filter.

Folded & squeezed into the front of the air box...

Then I made a (Loctite Superflex ATV) silicone ridge along the top edge of the air filter. About 3mm high.

I then let this dry overnight before applying my usual heap of waterproof grease to most surfaces & refitting the air filter assembly to the bike.

Add riding and plenty of dust (front of filter was caked in it)… and I can report that the silicone ridge remained in place with no sign of dust creeping to the back of the filter. I'm not sure if the squashed in foam did anything but it didn't move either so it's staying in place for the time being.
