  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

BATTERY OPTIONS

EarthX 12A installed...

Used weep holes in base of fender riser to secure vertically against bouncing and lock the bottom of the battery to the riser on the fender (since not using the tray). Used the metal side tabs w/tie to hold battery tight to the fender. Thin old wetsuit on back as a pad. Mounted low. Seat no longer rests on battery. Very solid and secure.

Rat tail file used to open the connectors for the screws a small amount. Pressed the starter and was stunned.... Spun so fast and lit up immediately, unlike the stock battery

What is keeping the battery from jumping off the fender notch if it isnt touching the seat? Im assuming you didnt zip tie it to the fender since that would make it hard to remove for filter cleaning. We are using a smaller battery on our TXC310R, but spaced it up so the seat notch still holds it in place.

It's tied to the fender on the bottom using the "ledge" that exists. The weep holes are low on that ledge, so they hold the battery from bouncing/moving vertcally and keep the base from moving up and over the ledge. The horizonatal tie keeps the battery back. By cinching the two ties up top I can keep things tight and not have the ties slip to the sides.

For removal. Snip the red tie up top, the middle tie and slide both vertical ties to the side (I left a tie loop on the left tab for the horizontal tie). Reinstalling Takes 2 new ties. Slide both vertcal ties back on, tie them together and add one to the existing loop to secure it horizontally.

Initially I tried to mount it up high so the seat rested on it but the top interface isn't flat and stepped so tricky to locate just right and then the base with soft shims isn't solid without a proper box. It's going to bounce, so decided my skeleton battery box was the best way. I've tugged and pulled and it's very snug.

Weep holes that were used:

You should be able to still use the oem tray to add more battery support, it sort of locks the assy into place along with the zip ties. (No?). Thats how I did the smaller Ballistic mounting.

The battery did not fit the tray and would need a fair amount of grinding to fit as I could tell. I was worried about wasting a good tray doing r+d as I'de have to thin the sides a fair amount.

Watch that postive cable on right where it is close to rubbing frame, or you are going to be riding a welder some day.

Talk about being in a hot seat!

I picked up a Champion Motorsports Li-Po battery today. I've never heard of it and don't know how long it'll last, but thought I'd give it a try since it's only 50 bucks :) my 630 needs a major weight loss program. The batt took about 4kgs off...pretty good start I'd say

Latest update: Earth X is sending me a replacement battery as mine that started once, would not start a second time. It lost it's juice in 3 weeks in my garage and had to kick it about 50 times to get it to fire up. Once charged voltage is good and so is voltage running but somewhat floored it was drained today as my stock Yuasa can sit for weeks and not even need a trickle. I am a bit po'ed since I was going to gas up the bike, load it in the van and begin my 3 week trip to CO, but that's on hold till the replacement arrives. The upshot is I may never trust these new batteries any more than my stock and will be taking my Yuasa with me just in case. No matter the warranty, it's the inconvenience that sucks and if this happened at a trail head in CO I would be fuming. Since I am not a sponsored rider I am posting this. As a retail customer I feel others may want to know my experience.

I apologize for the inconvenience you are having issues with your Ex battery, I have yet to seen one fail like this. I am happy that Ex is sending you a replacement asap. I am not entirely convinced that you didn't have a drain issue though, especially since your trickle charger was cycling the fuel pump, efi and starter solenoids.

That's a strange one with the solenoids as it's a consistent clicking on/off till it is about topped and charging stops/green light. I almost think it's the ecu doing the switching as it senses the charging pulses or the headlight/instrument auto switcher.

A couple of us posted about it in an earlier thread so I thought may be common to the '13's with no ignition key. It has been this way since new, as I connected the hard wired connectors as soon as I brought the bike home (as I do on all my bikes). I keep 3 vehicles on this trickle charger I rotate as needed. None make this ckicking noise in use.

Each time since last November I connected the tender though, it was charged within 5-10 mintes so I felt there was no draining happening. I'm at a loss to consider what it may be and if I charge the battery off the bike it's a non issue. With the EarthX I simply left the connectors off knowing, according to the specs, it was going to be stable for a long time...

Thanks to Earth X for a very quick replacement in 2 days. Installed last night, test rode this morning. Voltage checks good so packed and on the road to the high country in the am.

Post trip and 3 weeks later Battery Update on my Earth X:

Very stable voltage and results from initial install, wired up and overnoight (to test for parasitic drain) as well as in use the last few weeks with some major starter spinning at times. 13.33, 13.42, 13.39 and today after the trip 13.41.

As I said, the Earth X spun the engine over easily and for a long time without lag. Being accustomed to the Yuasa I expected slowness after a couple of hits of the starter but no dice. My initial EX battery was faulty but replaced quickly. Current battery is very good. I revised my install by adding two of the included pads on the bottom of the battery so they provide a pad and added grip to the fender lip. Then zip tied as my pics have shown. Still solid and no shifting, bouncing etc... So... I can reccomend Earth X and the Earth X Battery as it is performing well

Just ordered another Earth X for my '06 Ducati Sport Classic... Stock battery finally gave up at 8 years!

*Update - EarthX ships fast! and just like the one in the Husky, the Ducati fired right up after it''s long hibernation. Had a nice sunset ride tonight.
