  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

BATTERY OPTIONS

My Harley battery is about 8 yrs and finally showing it's age. Maybe it's time to try one there, lots of cranking power needed for a big twin.

EarthX is superior to Shorai, stronger outer case, no special charger needed, balances the charge to each cell and cannot be damaged from over charging/discharging. Designed and manufactured in the United States.

I'm looking at this battery to replace the one I have -- the ZipTy website shows one battery ETX12A, I am assuming it will work for all 4 strokes?

I'm using a Turntech 5 amp in my 13 310 TXC and it works great! Tried a 2.5 amp but it would not start bike hot. I didn't read whole thread so hopefully I'm not posting something irrelevant

(shorai apparently has some internal circuitry as well that balances the cells- learned this upon further examination)

Got my Shorai LFX14L2-BS12 an installed with a piece of the included foam on the bottom, back, and front of battery (visible in pic).
I used velcro on the back fender and the back of the battery- then ran this velcro strap across the front. (purchased from Ace Hardware)

These batteries are definitely lighter, quite noticably so. But can you tell once its mounted? I truly believe I could notice it in tight woods, fast direction changes. It was more flickable. Was that in my head? I don't think so, I immediately forgot about this 'upgrade' once installed and just concentrated on riding. There were no big bling signals saying an upgrade might exists. BUt my bike reminded me of the feeling I was a bit jealous of when I road my buddy's 11TE310. The ability to change directions and manipulate the bike's weight and balance was that noticeable. I am not saying a battery changes my 09TE450 into an Xlite. I am saying loosing the weight on top where it counts- is a big step in the right direction. These Lifpo4 batteries are the cheapest way to loose bike weight and in the right place. NICE!

Interesting perception. With this in mind, does anyone know the weights of the stock battery, the Shorai and the Earthx?

This is not a total answer to your question - but close. I did a quick write-up when I installed my EarthX.

I have to say I have been VERY pleased with the battery and the support from the company. I have emailed them a couple of times with very specific technical questions and received an answer from one of their engineers within an hour. There is quite a bit of design that goes into these that they don't market. They are more than just lithium batteries. I take my 449 DEEP in the woods on single track with no worries about the lack of a kicker. It alleviated a major concern I had about the bike early upon purchase.

That doesn't answer my question at all! But it does raise the only issue I have with the bike too. I also wonder why it does not have the force to start quicker, particularly when hot. But I had this down as fuelling, not a battery issue. Not initially anyway. There could be a time when the battery is weak and the bike has been over on the ground when it is hot. And the battery just can't cope.

Sorry, your old thread does help, thanks! It seems unbelievable that Husqvarna, competing at the very top of the enduro market, did not see this extra bit of money as a way to get the official weights down, lower than the comparable KTM.

All the little gremlins I had vanished with a strong battery. Even my odo works as I never have the compression induced failure to starts which always reset all the odo data.

Could be your compression release it not working 100%. A dealer here does a polish just on the actuator / cam and says it makes them start way EZer.

Funnily enough I weighed my 310's OEM battery before replacing it with a Shorai. It fits perfectly "as is" but I stuck the thinnest pads included in box to the stock battery holder just to isolate it a little better and to provide some shock absorption.

The Shorai is 3 pounds lighter. In fact, at 1.53 pounds it is exactly 1/3 the weight of the 4.6 pound stocker.

Perhaps of equal importance - especially for those without a kick starter - it has 60% more CCA's (220 vs 130).

I bought my first Shorai for my Ducati about 4 years ago. And after investing in their charger (Charge and Store Battery Management System - which works excellently BTW) I have just stuck with them and never got around to trying any of their competitors' alternatives.

My original Shorai is still going gangbusters - as are three others I've put in other bikes since.

I just installed my EarthX battery yesterday. To get around the slight size issue was pretty easy.

The holder has 3 ridges on each side that protrude into the case. I just sliced those off and it fits perfectly.

I stuck the supplied pads on the bottom to get it up to the same height as stock, so it shouldn't move around vertically, either.

It cranks the bike over handily. I just hope it proves more reliable than my short-lived Shorai! I expect that it will.

I found the top of the battery surface not so good for the seat bottom interface so tossed the tray and zip tied to the shelf on the fender. Doing this positions it lower and further from possible contact with the frame cross member.
