  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Better Coolant For My TE-449?

apache te 449

Husqvarna
B Class
In a week, I am going to be putting on all my new goodies on my te-449, that I have been purchasing from Zip Ty Racing all winter long. I can't wait!

Every time I think I'm done with "her", I find something el$e.

I am interested in getting some better coolant, maybe?

Is the XF Coolant I see on the site worth the money?

Which one would you recommend?

XF+ Race Coolant or XF2 Coolant?

I live up in Mt. Shasta CA, so the shipping is going to be expensive.

Is it worth it? I dont race, but use this bike as an everyday commuter in the warm months for work.
Mostly on logging roads. I want to order this tomorrow if I think it's worth it.

Please give me some feedback, Thank You Very Much!

Ive heard waterless coolants have advantages over standard coolants that can be of some advantage if your bike runs hot by reducing boiling on hot spots. Dont be fooled otherwise though because unless you have that occurring standard propylene glycol coolant will take heat out just as well and is cheap.

A possible negative of waterless coolants could be the non boiling nature though. If something in the cooling system fails you wont have steam as an indicator that somethings wrong when you would otherwise stop the bike. They sell evans at our local shop which I believe is similar to XF. The dealer and many guys like it.

Water works well in all my Husqvarna branded bikes but the water pump seals need some coolant for lubing them or over time, you might accelerate the seal going bad. ... So I add some coolant ...then I waste the coolant in some manner and I add more. The end. Ride safe also.

DISCLAIMER: Plain ol' run of the mill, 250cc Husqvarna dirt bike rider here.

Just get the XF2. Its well worth the money. It cools more efficiently, doesn't corrode, won't build pressure like water based coolant, lasts a long time and you never have to worry about freezing. The only down side is its a little more expensive, but what's another $20 for something of quality that is actually going to do some good for your bike and add to your reliability?

If you feel you get value for money that is important. How does it cool more efficiently though?

There are tons of threads chronicling the advantages of the xf and xf2. Do a quick search when you have a momemt.

Here's the thing. I run XF and after this season will switch to XF2. At my last race there were bottleneck sections that caused big problems. I witnessed one bike and one quad with steam clouds coming out of them in a particular section of rocks. I wasn't worried one bit. The fan ran but I never lost a drop of coolant and my bike continued to run like a champ. The XF2 is not made by Evans like the original XF. It is a special proprietary coolant engineered by Tinken at ZipTy which is a lower viscosity for better flow while enjoying the non corrosive properties of waterless coolant.

Almost every racer in the desert is running either XF/XF2. Why, because in a 80,100, or 500 mile race, coolant failure and boil over aren't an option.

I'm currently running Evans Power Sports Coolant in my TE 511. Even in cool weather, the fan runs constantly. The bike is hot. Very hot. Everything on the bike above and beside the engine is hot. No warm -- hot! Even the seat. I believe the only advantage of Evans is that it allows the bike to run hotter without boiling. As the temps start to rise in our area, I'm probably going to switch over to Engine Ice ASAP. That is unless someone can definitively tell me that their bike runs COOLER with the XF2??

I put a fan kit on my 300 and my 501 came with one. They used to run all the time with engine ice and now the 501 rarely turns on and the 300 never does. I'm actually considering taking the fan kit off of the 300.

if its hot its hot, XF2 or not, too lean perhaps, injector clogging? bad spray pattern? fuel filter clogging? could be any number of issues. I have no test data for engine temp reduction from using non aqueous coolant.

I switched to XF+ just prior to the XF2 coming out. My bike seems to run cooler, as fan is not running much at all since the change. Supposed to last a very long time so a wise change IMO. I may never get to use XF2 since the XF+ lasts so long and still have a half bottle.

It may be running lean, though I have a PCV + AutoTune. I have the target AFR set to 12.8. Not sure how well the AutoTune is working, however. Bike seems to lean surge still. Pops on decel, etc. AutoTune is detected in the PCV software, so everything seems hooked up correctly. And the bike rarely flames out. I guess I'll run some fuel injector cleaner through it.

I'm running standard, readily available Nissan auto coolant in my TE, the same as I've run for all my bikes and cars.
No corrosion, never boils in hard going and never had to top it up.
Due for a change now, and so is my 4wd.
One well priced product for both.
Works for me.

The coolant doesn't corrode, it's the water that is the problem. Even EngineIce contains 7% water. We used to use Evans, but at 2% water, it would still over boil in extreme conditions. Our XF2 is anhydrous and contains only trace amounts of water. Like synthetic oil, the purity of your coolant will increase it's performance.

I have the same bike. I don't notice any of this and my fan almost never comes on even in tight going slipping the clutch. I would not say it is a cool running bike like most 2 strokes but it does not seem to be an over hot running bike either. Wonder if something is up. I do run XF and XF2 and like it. Tinken has steered me right on many things so I trust his opinion on a lot of stuff. I like that it does not build pressure so even if you have a hose ready to go or a lose hose clamp or whatever you don't lose coolant. When I installed XF in my 511 I pulled a hose to blow out the old coolant. When I reinstalled it I got side tracked and forgot to tighten the lower hose. Rode the whole next day and then to my horror found it when washing the bike the next day. oops. Popped the cap, had not lost a drop cuz it causes no real pressure. An added advantage thats not so obvious. I like it and will / do use it.

Are you referring to your TE or CR? I use Engine Ice in my WR250. That bike never runs hot. Even on the first ride after I got it with god only knows what in the rads. I drained all the fluids and replaced them after the the first "I can't wait to ride this thing" ride.

In my TE511, however, I used the Evans Powersports flavored stuff. Maybe I should start looking for intake leaks. I wouldn't be surprised if I got the airbox boot back on crooked after BF removal. I'm actually starting to get a little concerned. This bike has always run hot -- to the point of boiling gas. And with summer approaching, things are only going to get worse. If the fan is running constantly in 50 - 60 degree temps, what's going to happen in 90 - 100s?
