  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Let's play a game of "what's this?"

I changed my oil today after riding my bike about 150 miles since it's last oil change.

The biggest chunk of the keeper in this picture was stuck to the drain magnet, and the other I slid out of the side screen access hole. Any ideas where it came from?

wow thats a big piece to just come unglued! not sure but looks like part of a bearing or something that holds something else in place! what ever it is it can't be good!

Looks like a tape measure with rust. The other two half moon pieces look like bearing retainer clip or clutch plates. I'll take retaining clip to block.

It's a snap ring (AKA retaining ring or stop ring in the Husky parts book). And it's a big one. I looked through the whole parts fiche and founds some small ones here and there but the only big ones I saw were retaining the gears on the transmission shaft. So that's my guess, and it means splitting the case.

Thanks for the help guys. I went through the manual a couple of times, and was hoping that it was something that retained the crankshaft gear adjacent to the clutch. The problem is that the manual's diagrams can't be zoomed in on without getting fuzzy.

I had Bill at Bills Motorcycles Plus review the picture before I posted, and he thought it may be either that, or something to do with the starter gear.

I may just take the pieces down there and see if I can match it up with his parts to find out for sure.

Crikey, this was off your 510.
What the heck caused that??????????????????????????????????????????
We await the conclusion to this mystery.

Possibly the snap ring that holds the clutch piston? Those snap easily and although not sure if it could pass it is close to the left side filter screens.

Here's Bills reply from today:

Hi Brandon.I looked at alot of motor parts and it looked like the 3 gear clutch or maybe a bearing retainer? What did you find?BILL

Is a 3 gear clutch something having to do with the transmission? How 'bout the bearing retainer?

If it's something on the clutch side, I'll be relieved.

I was hoping I would post this picture and have someone definitively say "oh, yeah, that". Whatever I find, I'll let y'all know.

It looks like the snap ring in the sprag clutch that goes on the crank, under the primary drive gear.

First of all sorry for writing in Spanish, maybe someone can translate:
It looks like a retaining ring carried by the Huskies on the rollers which engage the starter motor with the crankshaft, and located on the right side behind the engine crankshaft gear that meshes with the clutch, once again sorry for the Spanish

Muchas Gracias
Joe

Cool,

Thanks for all of the help, and thanks for the translation services Joe.

fafartija, that's the exact answer that Bill originally gave me when he first looked at it.

I'll start by tearing the clutch out and looking around in there. I'm just hesitant to pull things apart 'til I know exactly where I'm going; I'm a beginner bike mechanic.

Do I need the special clutch removal tool (Part number 8000 A8190) , or is there something else I can use to hold things in place while I detach the hub nut?

If the special tool is just to keep the clutch from spinning while you remove the nut, then all you need probably is an air impact wrench. It will loosen the nut without needing to keep the clutch from spinning.

Thanks Dirtdame,

I went to try that one today, but found out I don't have a 27mm-- I'll get one tomorrow.

Has anyone else had a problem removing the brass allen head screw that secures the kick start? Mine stripped out with little force applied today. Any tricks to getting it out?

A tad of heat from a propane torch and an impact driver. Well, maybe not the torch if you are near a seal.

My kick start bolt was stripped and stuck...did a little drilling, put some Gorilla Glue on an easy out, stuck it in the hole and let it dry. Used my impact gun and took it right out. When you are removing the clutch hub, there is a tab on the washer you'll have to bend back before removing the bolt. A friend of mine held the hub while I used the impact gun on the nut. Also watch for a small O ring that will go between the big clutch cover and the case...just below the top right oil filter bolt. It is for an oil passage way. Took me some time to figure out where the O ring came from. Good luck and keep us posted.

Here's the recent replies I received from Bill:

In regards to the chunks::

I took a Tc450 engine and an SM450 we parted out, looked at transmission shims, gear bearing plates, wire guides and nothing else loks correct in size or shape. The spague clutch holder would look like that if exploded and flattened out.SEE YA BILL

And in regards to the stripped out bolt:

HIT it with a center punch from the side and if that doesnt work just drill the head off and you can unscrew with your fingers been there done that.BILL

I didn't buy the bike from him, yet he's still willing to e- mail/ support me with my problems. I didn't ask for any help beyond a quick look at the chunks to see if he recognized them, yet he's still asking how things are going, taking his stuff apart, etc. Very cool.
