  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Let's play a game of "what's this?"

Hi Dave,

You have to buy the entire assembly-- can't just buy the snap ring from what I was told.

I picked up a used one from Bills Motorcycles Plus off of a low mileage parts bike for about half the cost of a new one. I think it was $40, but don't quote me on it.

So, I don't have any issue with the snap ring, the part that is broken on my bike is the washer with the four tabs that come up around the freewheel. One of the tabs is broken off and the washer flops around between the freewheel and the gear behind it.

Can I just order part number 8000 A0710 to replace this part? (It is part number 5 of drawing 15 page 73 of the parts fiche) Or is the part I described part of the freewheel assembly and I have to buy the whole thing?

This is the second time I have had a SM510R motor break this same ring. Is there something that causes this and what can I do to mitigate the chances of it happening again.

When you get the primary gear off take some pictures of the freewheel, as the new one needs to be fitted in the same direction - it is possible to fit 'em back to front. The (missing) circlip will indicate the direction of fitting.

Are you sure? I just did mine and it all fell apart when the assembly came flying off the shaft,So I couldnt see how it all went together. But when putting the freewheel into the housing/gear it would only go one way. The bike starts with the e button.

Would the bike start if I put it together wrong?

Sorry I missed this Joel,
I am sure you figured it out by now, but the entire thing has to be replaced.
EDIT: I was wrong and my memory must be fading. Read the following posts.

I was told by Bill and Bill's MC Plus that we need to be using the compression release lever. I can't remember whether he said to use it when hot or cold-- you may want to PM him-- he's a member of this site.

The four tap ring that locks the freewheel assembly into the housing/gear is sold separately from the freewheel assembly.

Are you talking about the one found in my post number 36 (first picture)?
I guess my memory is fading already.

Oh crap-- my bad.
Thanks for setting the record straight Dave.
I was thinking of the clip found in photo 36 that I managed to break into pieces.

Lost track of this thread and just found it again. I was able to order just the washer with the four tabs and it was no issue from there. I have also started using the decomp lever when starting the bike which will hopefully help with not breaking this washer again.
