• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Man down...again Buddy Jake

thanks for the news update. Jake will be back.

our crew had a rare incident at Tecate HS this year but nowhere as damaging as this Jake deal.
30A rider Tommy B followed a pro line (no clear ribbon to follow at the spot) off a boulder they used to jump (blind!!) a nutty gap and augured in, broke left wrist and right hand bones. He was splinted enough to drive himself home and to ER.

I chatted with Jake tonight. He seemed to be feeling low and in a ton of pain. This no style, over the boot pants, lanky, Husky loving dork is one of the best riding pals you could have. I'm usually full of smart ass words, but I didn't have any. I am genuinely sad that he's not mobile, working or riding.

To cheer myself up I watched this video of one of the last times we rode on a wet and slippery Oregon day.

Heal quickly brother.

Ok, the carnage and stuff...

My friend Tim grabbed the camera and documented the scene, he knew that is exactly what I wanted him to do.

Before that I had time for what was supposed to be a self portrait to remind me of my misery. I failed on that one and it looks like I am just chilling for a nap here.

Later,

Heal up well & quick, I can't believe you look so calm there. When I broke my femur into 4 pieces I'm sure I did not look like that. No morphine until after they brought me to the ambulance, bouncing me across a few hundred yards of rough terrain.

Took over 24 hours to have my first surgery & they also made my leg too short, 5 days later extended in surgery #2

What's the deal with the leg getting shorter? The breaks are so ugly that they can't get them to fit back together correctly?

Get well Jake!

Thanks for the video, Kelly! I'm really bummed to hear Jake's having a tough time. I've been there and it sucks hugely. Nothing we can do except keep him in our thoughts and let him know we support him. Got my papers from State Disability the other day. As soon as the check arrives I'll be donating to Jake's PayPal...whether he wants me to or not :D

Get well Jake!

In my case it broke into 4 pieces, the two main & 2 little ones right at the break. Doctor #1 just pressed the 2 main together & put in the screws. A few days later realized his error & redid it. I've had 5 surgeries, #5 by a competent surgeon (Doc #2), the ends were so worn & not joining #5 had to cut the ends & take out the 2 little pieces for virgin bone growth. Now my legs 18mm shorter, but finally healed.

Well as Jake is not updating you i will. :D He is doing a lot better :applause: Redone leg is doing real good. he has good mobility and getting around well. Saw the doc today and all good news. Very happy for him. Saw him yesterday and he looks like a skinny Kevin Windom with a beard and everything. Good stuff.

Sounds good and now just a matter of time to heal ...

Ok, I am sorry for not updating this thread more often. I just felt a lot of negativity for a while, really didn't want to pollute the forum with my negativity. This stuff really sucks. There were some dark days, really I would wish this on no one. I have lost 20 lbs and now I don't have to unbutton my pants to take them off. I really didn't need to lose any weight either.

Now for some good news!

Yesterday I drove for the first time! To the indoor MX to watch Montgob1 represent Husky! Kelly even stopped by for a bit. That was huge for the mental state, I was giddy like a 16 year old heading out for the first time. I also switched to crutches from the walker, that made going solo a bit easier.

Today was my 1 month checkup with the orthopedic surgeon, he was very happy with my progress. My flexibility is up to 120 degrees, he said I should be at 90 degrees. I am far enough ahead that he said I don't need physical therapy at this time. Going to try to stay ahead of the game on that one. He cleared me for 50-75 lbs of weight on my leg and in 2 weeks whatever I am comfortable with. He took xrays of my leg in his office and sent me to the lab for xrays of my back, hope to hear from the neurosurgeon on those soon.

Here is the xray from today... looks great right.

Later,

x-rays are always weird to look at ... Looks like that bone on the bottom side where the rod is should be cutting out of your leg ...

I broke my leg a few yrs back ... it was dark days of pain level 8 for about 4 months and crutches ...

Just keep moving as much as possible ... Too much pain and you moved too much ... The worst is probably behind you now and you just need time ...

I have a lot of respect for anyone who has endured most any type of breaks and surgeries ...

Ok, now for those videos I was talking about. It was one of the most epic days ever at this area, perfect dirt, a bit of mud here and there and nothing but smiles! Until the frowns.

Here is the last lap before impact we were planning on doing 4 laps in a row, didn't quite work out that way. I am chasing my friend Dick on a KTM200, he is a great rider and a blast to ride with. A bit odd, but most of my friends are.:D

And the crash video, I stripped the sound for public consumption. If you dig around a bit, the one with sound is there it just makes the video a touch more brutal in my opinion.

Oh, pain! Broken femur was about 20 times the pain I had ever felt in my life. It really really sucked.

I have been off the pain meds for 4 or 5 days now, that seems to have helped my mental state a bunch also. For now I take a tylenol PM before bed and deal with the aches and pains during the day. My back doesn't seem to bother me much so far, I hope that is a good sign.

Later,

Don't over take that Tylenol ... it can cause kidney failure ...

Yep I know what you mean on the meds ... I was on Oxycodone ... it gave me nightmares as vivid as reality ... I quite taking it ... I could have hurt someone if they had been around when I woke up from the night mares ...

Beer\whiskey\alchohol is about as good a pain reliever is there really ... Side effects are you get drunk if you over medicate and you might wanna get up and go to the club ...

Did you crush another vertebrae?

Oh yeah, Oxycodone! That is what I was on. I only had one midnight freakout, but that could have been fever induced. I have had that happen 3 times before this, all of that not fun for the wife. Especially when I am trying to go for a walk about a couple days out of surgery.

I cant do much alcohol, it affects the blood thinners and messes up the levels that they are trying to keep steady so I can get rid of the blood clot. Also eating salads does the same thing, odd!

Yes this time it was T12, a burst fracture only 4mm away from the spinal cord. Much worse than the T6 compression fracture last time. I need to measure myself and see if I am shorter.

I told the doc about my nightmares and he just laughed ... ;( ...

Any of the backbone hits are bad .. some worst ... Its a marvel of a device the way it can protect the spinal cord ... It'll compress and allow some side to side movement (but not too much here) ...

I'm surprised you are not getting cat scans here ... The x-rays of made were awful looking ... You would not think I had a chance to walk ever ... But the cat scans were very clean, clear, precise ... One looked straight down my spinal canal ... I had a little chip pointed inside there was about it ...

Acetaminophen (tylenol) + alcohol =accelerated liver destruction. Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) - hydration= kidney(renal) damage.

Oxy*** is a narcotic. A synthetic opiate of sorts.

Jake, glad to read you are on the road to recovery!

And you do not want to take Ibuprofen with healing bones. Unfortunetly for me Oxycodone makes me puke so when I was busted up it was just tylenol and getting used to pain.

I hope the healing goes well.

Jake, you hit the ground really hard and that terrain looks really packed down... I can't really tell what happened on the video ... I did see a flash on the speedo that looked like 40mph around the time you were heading into the crash ...

At the 1:08 mark, you cross a little wet spot ok, then at the 1:09 mark the terrain seems to have a couple small rollers maybe... Then it looks like the bars just crossed very badly and you were slammed down over them ... Do you know what happened?

PS -- Looked like quite a battle you guys were having ...
