• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

May never ride again

Stay positive big guy............wish you well and hopefully before you know it you will be
back cruising again.

The surgeon called last night and had to postpone until Friday. The prosthetic joint he wanted as a backup was not available yet. Another day of waiting, I just want the surgery over with so I can start the healing process.
You folks don't know how much all of your comments have inspired me to pick up the pieces. I really appreciate each and everyone that has replied. It means a lot to hear from fellow husky brothers and sisters from all over and especially your individual stories of recovery.

Luckily we have a pool so I will definitely use that as a means of therapy.

Sorry to hear of your accident, I hope you make a full recovery and are back on your bike soon. I have heard "you'll never ride again" plenty of times, prove the doctors wrong, believe in yourself and don't give up. It's been done MANY times, add yourself to that list my friend.

Your parts are on backorder

(trying to inject humor, laughter is the best medicine)

Many on cafe husky have had arduous medical journeys, and they continue to ride, myself included. These things are tough but try to focus mostly on the present while dreaming about good things in the future. :)

I went trail riding on Friday on my te 250. On our 3rd run, I went down, and landed and bounced flat dab on the only rock that was on the damn trail, I wasn't even going fast at all. 2.5 hr painful ride to the emergency room then 2 hrs at the ER, they get my x rays back and tell me that I shattered my humerus and finally give me a shot of morphine, which did very little. It is the ball that is part of the shoulder, literally in a lot of pieces.
Orthopedic shoulder specialist tells me I will need surgery and a possible prosthetic ball joint. I have surgery scheduled for this following Thursday. In all his years he has never seen an injury this bad to a shoulder. He will try the plate and screw method but is not sure if the bone will disintegrate. He says I may never get to ride again and if lucky will get 70% mobility back and if I have to get the prosthetic I will need that replaced in another 15-20 years. I am bummed and the bike is not even paid for. I had just put on my motosportz disc guard as well:banghead:

Sorry hate to hear these things when people get hurt but it happens. The healing process takes time. As far as never being able to ride again BS it's up to you 99% of the healing process is between your ears. Now it's time to rider-up.

March 1979 Baja race Mexicalli 250 20 miles from finish line Ran out of Talent in a Big way. Big ugly crash broke my Humerus, ball, socket, everything from elbow up in over 50 places. Yes I said 50 they quit counting. Air splint and morphene at a Husky pit got me to the finish line Won the race.
Thats to long a story and how the drive home went.
Was in ICU for over a week, Was seriously bad enough to have wife call family in Nor Cal to come down, turns out good thing as after 8 days I got my ass out of bed and did a shuffle down the hall pushing my IV rack all fluids running. Happened by the Nurses station and a group of Dr's were discussing my plight much like Tv series (House) I heard " only thing we can do is to TAKE IT OFF" Just turned my ass around shuffeled back to my room called my dad and told him to pick me up at the main enterence don't come in and don't ask.
Pulled the I'vs out shuffeled out the main entrance bear ass hanging out of the hospital gown lots of funny looks. Didn't even get home before Hospital called, they called back when I got there convinced me to come back only after assuring me they would not take it off. They got hold of a DR. Whitwer World class Hip replacement specialist.
He put me back together without any screws, plates, wires anything no surgery. The way he did it was to put a cast from above my elbow to my fingers weighed 17 pounds and hung it from around my neck to pull it down and by putting hospital kotex pads to push the bones together enough to start growing back together, 3 months setting up in a chair. Tons of bone meal, calcium, gallons of milk and cases of Kalua. If I'd sold all the pain killers would be a multi millionare and wouldn't be selling Huskys.
Therapy was hell, my goal was to race the Baja 1000 in November which I did should have won it but mix-up at last pit didn't have any dark goggles after turnning into the rising sun was blinded and couldn't get thru the dust finished 4th 5 min out of 1'st
Point for this long post NEVER EVER SAY NEVER. 99% OK 90% Split other 10% between Dr, milk, Kalua ect.
Am still racing Baja, and riding today.
If you ever get down on your self feel free to call (714)540-2920 I'll kick you in the ass and get you going again.

First I want to say my intent is not to try and "one-up" George. When I was wounded in summer of 07 in "Douche-bagi-stan", my leg was very mangled (amongst other stuff...literally got hit from head to ankle in many places). Docs debated about the leg, of course I too tried the frantic bear assed run away in wheel chair thing too. They thought it over again (Damn intern young buck Captain Army Doctors!)called some Colonels and an awsome USMC specialist from Bethesda Hospital and tried some new stuff. lots of Titanium and PT, morphine, desire, and "I never quit...I ride a Husky" attitude got me riding 8 months and racing in 10. I also plan on being a weatherman after I retire from the service! Either that or a "mule" for a artel as I make every metal detector go nuts!

Hang tough, stay motivated and whatever you do....don't listen to country music when your going through recovery and therapy.....it's good to listen too unless your down...then it just magnifies the misery!

Joe

Think positive and get a 2nd opinion. I wish you the best. Alot does depend on attitude and the person. I had open heart surgery 10 monthes ago and I am beating guys I could not 5 years ago!! Hope you have a speedy recovery.

update time.
Made it through the 5 hr surgery. Doc was able to use the screws and plate method. He had to take a breather since at first it was so bad he thought the prosthetic was the only option. Good for him to soldier on. The nursing staff and hospital stay was horrible to say the least. After the nerve block on my arm wore off I was in intense pain. The IV was not in my arm properly and the pain pump was also not working as it should. finally after 3 hrs of writhing in pain they gave me a shot of morphine and a new iv hooked up with a new pain pump. Dilauded pumped in every 8 mins. Hospitals are not a good model for efficiency. I also now see why addicts are itching all the time, those meds made my skin crawl like a SOB.
Now we will wait and see if the bone will hold up or in 3 months it will have to be reworked. I cant go through damn surgery again
Itching is now under control as well as the pain. I have gotten down to 1 5mg percocet every 3 hrs instead of 2 7.5mg. I was literally a zombie all weekend and monday.
My arm will be immobile for at least a month for the screws and plate to take, it better damnit!
I will post some pics soon of when I pulled my iv out and bled all over myself and the chair.
Thursday I go in for a checkup and bandage dressing change. Hopefully it is waterproof, since now I can't get the one I have wet, so spongebaths it is.
Joe Chod and George, great stories you have there! even more motivation for me.:notworthy:
Again thanks for everyones support!
I did see the wife made another payment on the bike so maybe I will get to keep it. I jsuushave to take it easy for a while so this will heal as it should

If you need the Happy Button USE IT, Duct tape works great to hold it WFO. When you wake up life stays a little fuzzy but it's OK.
Don't worry about it you've got a 50/50 chance on addiction I made it OK but Joe is another story Ha,Ha, were both here for you along with many others.
Later George

I concur on the WFO method with duct tape! It is supposed to give 10 spurts every hour and no more than 6 minutes apart. Tape that thing down....pass the hell out...sleep til pain is no more. Easy-Cheesy!
Joe

glad to hear you got to keep your oem parts. but what has been bugging me is.......

is the bike ok? i'm kinda worried here!

jk. heal up and you'll be back on two wheels soon.

George and Joe are right don't skimp on the pain meds!!! Deal with the issues later when you are in better shape. When I broke all the ribs(yes every one) on my left side in a wreck in 1981, I lived on Morphine for the better part of 4 weeks. Had a problem getting straight but that is the least of your worries. Pain is an inhibitor to recovery and mental well being don't try to be frugal. Keep your dauber up and lean on George and Joe when times are bleak. Support from those that have gone before you with the same issues really does help.

My thoughts are with you,
Walt

Oh yeah forgot you'll never have to look for the weather report again, you will know.

Now that right there is one true statement! I'm actually a weather man by trade but am much more accurate using my body, joints etc. My hips have a 95% accuracy rate!
