• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil Change Drama

Not to sound like a dufus, but I thought this was about not what to do when changing your oil. Maybe we need to change the name of thread?
Cheers
A sticky thread in the area designated for the TR650's called "oil change drama" seems suitable to me. And I would expect people new to this site would not want to wade through foot peg and other non-"Oil change drama" things.

I might know someone with boxes and boxes of oil caps... *cough* Can't quite remember the name... starts with a Z...

Maybe we could find out the thread size?
Hey Tinken! Thread size is 22mm x 1.5. Let us know what you've got.

I think all the plugs have magnets pressed into them already. 22mm x 1.50 x 32mm
If you need one without a magnet, you might be able to pull it out, I don't know...

Ouch! that Ducati oil plug is expensive. Well, if you like the magnet, both of these are half the cost.

Are those drain plugs (under the engine) or fill plugs (threads into upper frame)? If those are uppers...then it looks like we lose the dipstick feature of the oem part.

This is true, but the dipstick hits the frame inside and prevents good thread line up. My first Terra had crossed threads from the factory due to this. Didn't you see that sweet dipstick DirtyOldMan made...super light and easy to carry.:). I may get the above plug with the allen and scribe my allen wrench.

It would be easy to add the o-ring with what Tinken is offering if you so choose. Someone should maybe try one first, but Wadejesu is currently already using the Ducati plug.

The Ducati plug has an aluminum gasket, so the oem oring must be transfered. The larger plug has an oring.

Hmmmm...if absolutely needed, a dipstick section could be turned down from aluminum (or just use al rod cut to length) and have another magent epoxied (or have a press fit feature) to it. That would allow the dipstick section to move as needed when screwing the plug in but not allow it to fall off. I just happen to have a bunch of those little magnets at my desk and our spec sheet says it has a 5 pound pull force!

I really like the ducati one too. Hey Tinken, can you have Danny hold the TR plug and the Duc plug side by side and see if the Duc plug is a little more pink-ish? The pic makes it look so but it is totally different lighting and that could be why it looks that way.

Coffee

Forget the dipstick, I just use a nylon tie that I have with level notches in it, keep it under seat, don't realy need to worry unless you see oil leaking. I thought changing oil on a Harley was a pain, this is just as messy, The form a funnel helps.

The shop closed for the day and I wasn't there today. I will be there late tomorrow and will take a picture of them side by side for you guys.

Lol...but then I don't have an excuse to play with the lathe in my lab

My last bike was a KLR that apparently the owner before me didn't take care of....I always worried about my oil level (until I put in a 688 kit that is)********************************************************************************! :banghead:

Lol, wish I was closer to your shop so I could see what all you guys have. Might just have to take a road trip your way when it get warmer! Anyways, credit card is in hand when you get a chance to check out the plugs. Thank you Tinken!!!

The Ducati plug is a deeper red, where as the other one is lighter. Zip-Ty didn't have an o-ring in stock to fit the Ducati plug and the other plug o-ring is too big, so you will have to use the oem o-ring for now. These actually have very powerful magnets on them, I couldn't get them any closer in the picture because they were literally flying together.

I spoke to Ty Davis today and he actually offered to make a dipstick oil plug for TR owners, but I like Kjack's magnetic stick-on dipstick idea. And with all the 449 mods I have just submitted to our machinist, he is a little busy at the moment. Kelly and Clay both have the resources to make such an item if needed and they are both excellent machinists.

Aaaaaaaaaaaah...perfect, thank you for doing that and I will be the duc one ordering right now****************************************!!

Wow! That looks good. Better than I expected! I would like to see if after a few miles there is anything stuck to the magnet, it is very powerful. Very cool, glad I could help you guys out. :D
