• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Silly question but...

Read up on the the 690 before you buy. I've read the the FI on the 690 is kind of snatchy on-off throttle.

Don't get an SM if you plan on doing mostly dirt. Get a TE. You can convert, but it's more difficult with the radial calipers now. Plus, you get robbed of suspension travel on the SM. That might be resolvable by changing some internal spacers, but I'm not sure. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to just get a TE. I've seen several used 630s in California with under 1k miles on them.

I've heard of valve problems, too...

There are a LOT of problems with this model. After all of the RR's on them I wouldn't touch one.

I think the OP was asking about a TE, not a SM. I grew up in his area, the Cascade foothills and beyond still offer a LOT of riding opportunities.

There may be a few 630's for sale in NZ/AUS but they are no longer being built (unelss I'm just completely full of BS). There was a run of them but now in R&D to create a new model with the BMW/rotax 650 mill. Look for a TE650 soon. It will be a dirty Strada.

If you're hellbent for a TE630 watch the classifieds as a few will come up for sale going forward. If I had to replace my TE it would probably be a Husaberg FE570, although it's awfully close to your other bike. For a true dualsport, I'm not sure, there isn't much to pick from. Everything else is a pig in comparison, the beemers and truimphs are more road oriented. The husky is just a big dirtbike and it really shines in that role.

My last big trip was 800 miles, about 75% offroad, with a bunch of SE's, a 990, and a F8. It kept up with them on the road but really walked away from them off, and didn't wear me out like the bigger bikes do.

Unfortunately my magic wand is broken.

Should I look at the ktm 690 then?

You are more than welcome to sample my TE5411 and see if it fits the bill. what are you looking to do. I have done lots of 100 plus mile days on it DSing and it is great. Also several 200 plus miles days. Great bike. About to do 300 plus mile weekend on it.

Might take you up on that. Already have a wr300.
Basically i want something dirt orientated that i can freeway once in a blue moon without being miserable on it. I was looking at an f800gs for a while but frankly my dirt roots wouldnt like the heavy bulkiness street only feel of it. I was also thinking of a husaberg 570 too.

I know we have met. You might remember me and a few other guys helping you fix a throttle cable on the trail at Belfair. I also ran into you at another ride somewhere. Your USA flag sidpanels are hard to miss / forget.

Yeah, i remember. I rode out of old grunts house this last sat for a troop support ride.

When i had my ktm 525 i thought it was way way to much for belfare but perfectly fine up in the mtns. Hows that 510 at belfare? A handfull or is it such a good bike its ok?

Have got a 630. If I could choose anew, it´d be the 511R ... but it´s not easily registered as roadworthy here. The 630 is a bit too h e a v y.

I was going to get a Husaberg FE570 until the fire sale on TE630's last year. Couldn't beat the price and don't regret buying the Husky at all. Although the 'berg still gives me wood every time I look at one.

Should I look at the ktm 690 then? I already have a wr300 for trails that's duel sported...but...lol it's not a fun duel sport. I want something I can hit the freeway in a pinch, hit an occasional trail, be a once a month commuter and fire road explorer. there's a gazillion zippy roads with dirt roads right out my front door to so...

I want one for that reason too! Thinking about trading in my 08 450 in for something more streetabe and for the kid to ride with too.

Johngil had a F8 his TE replaced. He said exactly the same thing with first-hand experience. The little GS is a pig offroad. Obviously the TE isn't quite the same on road, and has to be modified quite a bit to haul gear, but it serves nicely as an adventure bike when properly setup. Mine will cruise 70-75 nicely on the hiway with a full load. It spanks the big bikes off.

The SE's are really popular out here. Just not the right bike for this old guy though, and for what I do with one.

The 'berg CL ads are the same bike. Somebody is gonna get a chance at one.

Is a dirty Strada (the Terra) going to be comparable to the te630? Will it fill that role as nicely?

Most of us don't think so, but there are a lot of fans for that motor. I think the key will be what weight it comes in at. Somebody quoted 340lbs dry and that would be do-able. We'll just have to see. My thinking is that it's gonna come in closer to what the Sertao is.

I'm sure it will be a nice bike. Just not sure it's going to be the same thing as the (now) old TE630 with the Italian mill.

The Aussie 630's for sale are the last coming here I believe. One Queensland dealer bought the last 10.

I found this:
Husqvarna claims its Strada weighs in at 173 kilos dry. That’s 375 pounds for the metrically-challenged.
That seems like a little too much for me. That is cracking back to 400 and I want to stay away from that. I think I am going to try to get one of the two of these te630s near-ish to me here. I hope I don't regret it when this thing comes out... with my luck it will be made of adamantium and magic weighing in at 200lbs with 80 horsepower. haha

You found two......more than most people find. Either one, whomever gives you the best deal I would say. BTW, Hope you find this place as helpful as I did when I was looking for answers.

PC

think those look about on par for what I should be payin'? turns out they are from the same dealer, by the by

I spoke to the dealership several months ago. IIRC one belonged to an employee and one was on consignment. I got the impression both were purchased before the $2500 retail price drop, not that it matters to you. My guess is one of them could prob be bought for $6K. While that may not be much less than some gave for a new one you have to consider what what else $6K will buy. A new KLR...?

Most believe the 630 replacement will weigh a bit more.
