  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Took the plunge, new TE449

AA Class
Well, I did it. After reading just about every thread on here and posting my question which you all generously answered I got a new 2013 TE449 I'm going to pick up tomorrow. my previous thread is here if anyone is interested. http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/te-310-vs-te-449.41642/

So I'm interested in doing the least amount of mods (at first), but I want the bike to be reliable and last, what I gather so far is:

Oil breather
SS oil filter
1150 CCs of 0w40 Mobil 1
Insert plug for the ECU or make my own from a piece of wire if it doesn't come with one.

Ride 30 miles change oil and filter, then 100 miles do the same, then 300 miles and do the same. Then after that how often on oil changes?

I want to make an order from ZipTy, which part numbers do I use?
Looks like breather vent cap HUS-BVC
Stainless steel oil filter 167
PC Racing oil filter spacer PCR-SPR

Maybe the waterless race coolant XF+, what does everyone think about that?

Is there a way to have the oil breather just vent back into the oil drain plug instead of a tank?

Yes on the waterless Coolant, you'll want to do that.
Just get the oil tank, do it right. Its worth it because it will hold more oil and not spit it out in the airbox.

You'll probably want to get the seat concepts seat - the stock one is not comfortable at all.

Oil changes 300-500 miles after that.

Good luck with the bike and you are ahead of the power curve by reading all there is read on this bike ... Don't miss the butterfly thread ... You are 100% new meat for that testing :)

I just added the oil breather tank kit and it works well. Several other small bits have yet to be installed. Exhaust will be changed out, and I really would like to know if ANY of the 2011 TE449's can be reflashed. Willing to ship it out for a try if there is a possibility.

Missed that, thanks.

So how do you change from km to miles?
put the dash on to the 'odometer' screen, then shut the bike off, then hold the button down and keep holding it and start the bike and if you keep holding the button it will bring you to a screen where you can change from km to mi

So I need three hands then. One to hold the dash button, one to push the start button an one to hold in the clutch. :)

Well I guess a rubber band will do the clutch. Thanks, the "manual" sux.

I believe you can pull the plug on the clutch lever banjo switch and it will then start any time. My TC449 does buts its in a G450X BMW chassis and theres nothing to plug it in to anyway. Try it and let us know.

Rode my 511 today after a long stint on my 250. Man I love that 511. The ZipTy suspension is incredible. Yes the bike is kind of big and nasty but I had so much fun chasing my 2013 KTM 300 6 days freind down on his wonder machine through the woods. Even in fully loaded DS mode shes a ripper.

Perfect conditions today...

Reflash ecu map 3, fmf slip on, jumper in, 1100/1150 cc of Mobil 1 0w40, take smog junk off. See how she rips, if oil spews into air box look at Ziptyracing kit, if not just ride the piss out of it. I've got 2000 miles on my 2013 449 with those mods and it rips. Oh yeah Ziptyracing gas cap is a must, oil changes after 300 to 500 miles change oil filter and clean screens every time and you should be good to go.

Enjoy a great bike dude! :)
I love my 2011 TE449 after some simple mods.

Another thing to do earlier rather than later would be to get some good quality grease into the rear shock bearing & linkages.
Two of the linkages have grease nipples (Zerks) on them, the lower shock bolt is easy to remove on a race stand, so no excuse for not doing them.
The lower shock bearing get dry quickly if you ride deep water/mud.

Welcome to the fold! Glad you didn't let the haters and flamers get you down! You are on the right track so far with your desired mods. Go forth and roost!:banana:Between ZipTy (Tinken) and Motosportz, you have better than factory support and experience with this machine.

Got it out in the dirt today for the first time. Lots of power, no flame outs and feels great when you give the throttle a twist! Now it's time for it's 100 mile oil change. One problem is it seems like the battery went almost dead on me. We were trail riding and I was in first and second most of the riding with stops to figure out where we were. Many pushes of the starter button with riding in between. Stopped once it wouldn't turn over, had to give it 15 minutes or so then it turned over, but slowly, and thankfully started. About a 45 minute ride on streets at 45 to 60mph to get home you think it would top off the battery but the battery tender is still not up to fully charged after a couple hours. That might be a problem... don't know for sure.

Thanks, part of the reason I thought I could buy one and keep it running. I love the design and wanted one since it was the G. :)

Thanks for the tip, one of the pre ride things I did not check.

Sounds like it needs a battery.

Brand new bike with 131 miles on it. I think I've read something about starting problems on the 449, I'll do some searching to see if my particular problem is normal or unique to me. More riding will give me more info on the problem. It was also 95 yesterday, hot as can be.

Earthx would fix that problem. It's twice the battery as the stock one and only 1.3lbs.

At about $130 a pound plus shipping that's quite a fix. I may consider that in the future if the problem persists. I've got the oil filter, spacer and cover coming, and also got the forever waterless rad fluid in the same package. Should be here Monday. Super fast shipping, thanks. :) I'll get the oil recovery/breather thing after a few months when warranty is out. I suspect a mod where you drill the valve cover will make any warranty void. Everything I've done so far can be easily put back to stock. I put a hose on the air box to extend it down so it wouldn't drip on my engine, only a drop or two came out, and that was the run home on highway. 1150 ml of Mobil 0w-40 at 30 miles.
