  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Took the plunge, new TE449

I know it shouldn't, trying to figure our why it did.

All modern 4st bikes have an automatic de-compressor on one of the cams. They use a 'bob-wieght' that swings out to disable the mechanism when the engine gets fast enough to run.
A spring pulls the mechanism back in to the 'operate' position when thhe engine stops.
If the engine stalls on the compression stroke, the mechanism sometimes doesn't release compression & the (weak, light duty lead/acid) battery can't crank through compression.

This is why the lithium batteries are better, they are the same physical size, but way more cranking amps to pull through these events.
Try deliberately stalling the engine a few times & restarting with your volt meter attached, you will see it will dip very low on cranking.

Looks like it's the battery. Sit 4 days in garage, tests out at 12.43 volts. Start, ride around block. Stop, try to restart and nothing. Check battery and it's 11.9. Looks like I get a unreasonably expensive battery for my bike. I'll call it weight savings and feel better about it. :D

Quality lead acid over here approx $90, SSB lithium $125 delivered.

Lithium has 90 more cranking amps & weighs 1/3 of lead acid......I'd call that well priced :D

I agree with dangermouse. It's a difference you can feel. One of the better upgrades, for the money, tbat I've done.

Well, on the battery issue I have 12.53 without running and 14.31 running. Looking good there I think. Is it just a 449 thing? (not start when hot on a trail like a dead battery)
Put a meter on it when you crank it, it may show charging and still not hold a charge.

Yep, lead acid batteries can achieve a "surface charge" that will show immediately after an engine run cycle or external charger. If there is a weak cell, that voltage cannot be maintained, resulting in a voltage drop after a couple of hours of rest.

I just decided to say heck with it and get the Earth X from Zip Ty. They are out but expecting them next week. I don't want to at the bottom of a ravine with no way to push start it and have to leave it there and walk.

I've had very good luck with my earth-x bat from ZipTy. did 360 miles this weekend, zero issues.
