  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Took the plunge, new TE449

Check out the charging voltage at the battery with the bike running. Make sure it's close to 14vdc or around there. With the bike off the battery should be high 12vdc range. maybe around 12.8ish. If it's not charging at idle properly check back with us or start checking the rectifier connections and the stater inputs to the rectifier.

Great looking bike! I was really close to buying a 2014 TE511 from Hall's but took the plunge on a 501. Big bores rule!

Brand new bike with 131 miles on it.

Sometimes they sit to long and go bad. Seen it before. Got a multimeter? Better sort it before it leaves you stranded. (no kicker) I have the earth-x battery, it is a very good battery, highly recommended.

Yes do that.

my stock bat was 12.7 sitting / 13.2 running.

My Earth-x is 13.3 sitting and 13.7+ running. Turns the motor over much EZer.

I know, they are expensive. But the electronics in the battery are like no other. They are so reliable that we use them in all of our bikes, including our factory race bikes. And on a motorcycle that has no kicker, you simply must have a good battery.

exactly.

Sweet no questions asked warranty. I got a replacement to my door in 2 days

If you don't mind me asking, how long did the first one last and what happened to it that it needed to be replaced? I had really bad luck with the Ballistic EVO2 so I am interested to hear about the EarthX. Did you need to pay to ship it back or?

I'm interested too. I tried three turntechs (different bike) and had nothing but issues. Had no interest in others til I saw the earth-x, heard good things and think the onboard management is a big deal. Its a big risk trying these batts on a bike with no kicker so I chose wisely and put some faith in what Tinken said as he had a lot of time with these batteries.

I'll say that the XF is a good choice. I haven't had to add any coolant since I put it in my bike. And I've been flogging the thing in the California heat.
The EarthX is a no-brainer. You can feel the difference in the handling of the bike immediately. Put an aftermarket exhaust on and you drop even more weight up high. With aftermarket exhaust, you also get the power increase, which makes it an even more value added addition.

If you are going to add a skid plate, I'm liking the Hyde. That thing is amazingly tough.

BTW, I've got a JD Tuner listed in the classifieds. If you are interested in unleashing the beast, it's for sale cheap. I'm only selling it because I picked up a used PCV + AutoTune.

It was always great until one time in the garage the bike did not want start and I cranked on it for a little longer than I should have. Probably only a few seconds but the battery I think went into some fail mode where the voltage drops to zero under load. It has some safteys built in where if you crank to long it shuts off for a minute, sounds like mine got stuck off.

They didn't even want the old one back because they have since updated the design of the battery management system and the problem I had shouldn't happen with the new design.
I think I filled out the warranty friday and I had a new battery on monday.

Well, my old multimeter died. It's so old I don't even remember when I got it... I'll check voltages when the new one arrives and post up here.

At about $130 a pound plus shipping that's quite a fix. I may consider that in the future if the problem persists. I've got the oil filter, spacer and cover coming, and also got the forever waterless rad fluid in the same package. Should be here Monday. Super fast shipping, thanks. :) I'll get the oil recovery/breather thing after a few months when warranty is out. I suspect a mod where you drill the valve cover will make any warranty void. Everything I've done so far can be easily put back to stock. I put a hose on the air box to extend it down so it wouldn't drip on my engine, only a drop or two came out, and that was the run home on highway. 1150 ml of Mobil 0w-40 at 30 miles.

A lithium battery (like the earth x) is worth the money.
Much better starting hot or cold. I can leave mine 2, sometimes 3 weeks at a streach, no trickle charger, & it fires straight up. Also after a stall, it cranks straight through.
Definitely recommend it.

Here is a tip I learned about starting my TC449: Do not pull the clutch in all the way when starting...just barely pull it in,( maybe 1/2" or so)..starts quick every time!

I use and sell SSB lithium polymer batteries, weigh about same as an iPhone and 220cca, very light and strong,2yr warranty, Australian made, top gear.

SSB is what I have. I have talked most of my mates into getting them too.:)
Shame I didn't know you when I bought it, got it from Sydney online.....
Ah no problem, I have a blinds and awnings business but also an online mobility scooter shop so sell batteries too.
;)
We don't stock them but get them sent in same day.

Well, on the battery issue I have 12.53 without running and 14.31 running. Looking good there I think. Is it just a 449 thing? (not start when hot on a trail like a dead battery)
