FYI Standard universal bar/fat bar adapters/risers won't work on the bike. Ordered parts weeks ago and just picked the bike up yesterday(finally!). Front of bottom clamp is taller than back = not level for adapters. I'll get some from motorsportz. Thought this might save someone from doing it twice like me!
FWIW another riser/adapter option is the Powermadd PoweRiser 475. I love this system as you not only raise the bar, but can postion it forward or back as well. Similar to Rox risers but being a 1 piece design they a lot more soild. I have both and I can twist the ROX set up, but not the PoweRiser.
Any of you guys have any luck with non-factory handguards? I'm looking for some that fit without removing the bar end weights. Preferably with an aluminum rail in them (not over priced touratech.)
My guess, and it is a guess, is that you won't be succesful. However, I think Cycra makes a Center Reach handguard which is longer than standard and is designed to go all the way to the bar mounts on the tripple clamp. You would have to experiment to see if thes will work, maybe with the Cycra fork mounts. Other than that, no ideas.
Ogre, do you have to use a ring or open ended spanner to tighten the two bolts on the front of the oem bar clamp holding those PoweRisers? I have the Rox as well and found they twisted a bit, those PoweRiser look great.
On the DRZ I use an open end wrench to tighten the forward bolts. On other bikes that have alan head bolts I rotate the mount back, tighten the front enough so I can just barely rotate the mount, then rotate it forward and only torque the back ones. I had to do the same with the rox.
I got them at a local Honda dealer, but here is a link... http://www.acerbis.com/handguards.php?idp=3648&ids=39&id_categoria=5 Note they will not work with OEM bars as the ends are closed (I supposed you could improvise). They will not work with the Motosportz/TrailTech bars either as the bars ends will not accommodate the Acerbis inserts.
I added these PowerMadd Star series handguards for wind protection. No aluminim rail, but simple to install/uninstall. They seems to do a fair job. I went for a 30 min ride at 37F and it was tolerable.
They look great! Was the install straight forward? any modifications to the bar ends or the handguards required ?
Thanks! They were easy to install. Requires a 10mm socket and wrench, and a 3mm allen wrench. It took maybe 30-45 minutes, including reading the instructions all the way through. The instructions were helpful because there are 8 possible configurations for mounting, but only 2 of them will work. I put them on in the gap immediately adjacent to the hand grips. There's a minor clearance issue with the brake fluid reservoir on the right mount -- it's no big deal. The quality of materials is good, but because there's only the one point of attachment for each guard, and no rail, they're not going to provide any protection when I drop the bike. They do give some protection from the wind and small objects.
Going for it. I ordered the HDB guards, top clamp, bars and anti-vibe inserts. Now I need the risers from Motosportz and that is in progress, I hope. HDB stuff is really top, and I'll be returning my Acerbis guards which just arrived this evening. I have HDB on the 630 and I don't think there is anything better (or more expensive!). I took IPA Brewer's lead and got the Henry Reed bend, almost the same as CR High. Ordering bars and guards thru HDB means they are pre drilled and tapped for the inserts, and the guards should fit pretty well. One problem coming up though is the key access. The HDB top clamp will cover it partially but I think trimming the key head will take care of that. I hope! The heated grips will follow, even though they may not work very well on the aluminum bars.
Let us know how those handguards fit! I took the Terra on single track and ATV trails yesterday and desperately needed hand guards. Already broke the brake lever I'll do a ride report with videos later.
Just got the Touratech handguards. Easy installation and don't need to cut the levers nor reroute or move anything. I ordered the white handguards plus the red spoilers. They are all plastic but they look good anyways... Picture is not great but here it is:
they do look nice but $119 for the guards and $32 for the spoilers plus shipping you could get some HDB's which IMHO would be far more protection.
+1. I always choose those with alu protection inside plastics.... If G650GS guards fit - I would highly recommend Barkbusters alu with VPS covers. They offer decent protection combined with quite wide choice of colors. http://www.barkbusters.net/products/205.html
