Ah, good point RD. 10 years or so and 2.6 million vehicles. Somehow I doubt the Terra will reach those numbers.
FWIW, I've had my Terra mossed 3 times and it temporarily rids the problem each time. The last time they also recalibrated the idle actuator and performed "parameter relearn procedure" whatever that is. None of it helps. I've also installed a booster plug and that temporarily solved the problem too but it seems the ECU eventually figures it out and over rides these temporary fixes. I'm assuming this Eruption magic device would have the same reaction. I"m thinking the Power Commander would fix the problem but I have no guarantee of that and it doesn't seem like I should have to pay that much to fix something that the manufacturer should be taking care of. It's all very frustrating.
I don’t have a dealer within 6 hours of me so I am basically screwed, but has anyone who is near the US bigger husky dealers had any luck with folks like Halls or maybe even Bills getting anything from Husqvarna US as far as fixes. The air box thing has me really upset as it will destroy the engine and unless you are a major dust devil, most likely not untill after the 1 year warranty time for most folks.
There was/is a huge class action suite on the GM incident. The first death from the ignition switch debacle occurred in 2002 and went until 2011 I believe. The CEO of GM testified in a Congressional Committee just last week.
I'm not disagreeing but we all sort of knew that with the bike being discontinued there would be support problems, yet we still purchased them. Most of us knew this upfront too. The one problem that is essential and should be addressed NOW is the stalling issue. This one thing could become an instant loss of life quite easily. It is dangerous, it is unacceptable. For me I did my homework and found that the Eruption mod best suited me. So I just bit the bullet and did it. It cured the issue for me. Should I have done it? No, of course not. But I wasn't willing to wait on a corporate suit monkeys to make a decision on a repair. I bought the bike to ride, that's what I intend to do. I made a decision to purchase a potentially unsupported bike so that portion is on me. As far as order of importance for defects and annoyances this is/was my priority list: 1. Stalling at idle - Dangerous, Do one of the spoofer fixes. Easily reversible if there is a recall. 2. Air box dirt infiltration - A motor killer, take this seriously and choose a mod to protect your engine and screw the warranty. 3. Rear bearing wear - Crap bearings, replace them when you have the rear wheel off doing a tire change. 4. Overheating - An annoyance, check the overflow hose it is likely pinched off, fix it. Burp the air out of your system. 5. Water in the swing arm - Potentially harmful, the fix is easy, drill holes and water proof the mud flap attachments
interesting point about the ECU over riding the mod....can we have comments on this please and is the Eruption mod actually permanent...?
That is an old school AC service thermometer. A small piece of split fuel line and a few wraps of tape for a good fit. On a side note, the temp will read too high when the oil gets hot, but it does fill the hole!!
Actually, the booster plug or eruption mod does fix the actual problem. Just because the temp readout is no longer accurate doesn't mean the problem isn't fixed. The temp display on the dash wasn't really useful for much anyway. It was always a few degrees off the real temperature, and if knowing what the actual temperature is, then adding a more accurate measuring device, with a sensor located in a place where it's not going to be affected by the heat the bike is generating seems a more sensible solution.
You need the Eruption to sort out the stalling, its like night and day. But perhaps we would have nothing to share if it all ran so wonderfully
Think of The Eruption & Booster Plug as being the same. The Eruption's advantage is a R/T curve that follows the original, to put it plainly it's more accurate at hitting it's target over a wider range of temps, it's simple, doesn't add clutter & it just happens to be cheap. Is it a permanent fix? Almost surely is, at least for the TR. Does the ECU eventually compensate for it? It's very unlikely it will compensate to the degree its benefit will be reduced to cause the lean stall to return. Why do I sound tentative? Because truly you really can't talk in absolutes. For example your bike may have a secondary underlying problem for all I know. If you got the $ & want to control all of your AF mixture buy the PC otherwise I'd go with The Eruption, go ride & take out the cats when you find the time. Mine had the stalling too. It stalled on the test ride with a flat bed tow truck on my ass. It stalled upon throttle closing, it stalled upon throttle open, it stalled after splitting traffic & when the light turned green, it was dangerous & too frequent to ignore.
I did a lot of research on this forum before buying (thank you all for the great info) and still purchased a Strada. I believe that it is a great bike with a few problems but at $7000 ride away I got a lot of bike for my money. Need to spend some time and money to iron out the problems but with all the great support here and the enjoyment of working on the bike I believe it was a great purchase. Mine runs well, the only engine mod has been to remove the exhaust cat convertors - however it is a restricted version with only 3/4 throttle body operation to full throttle movement. This may change when it is de restricted - hopefully not! Just do the "must do mods" and get out and ride it. On the point of support my dealer Moto GC in Melbourne have been excellent to date.
Whilst I do love my bike the lack of support from the manufacture and dealer has turned me off buying from a smaller maker, my next bikes probably going to be from the one of the big four..... Mines never had a stalling issue when running (just when taking off after start up) but it did get water in swing arm in which I believe it should have been replaced. I’m just hoping that nothing major goes wrong otherwise I may be up shit creek
Yep, I wouldn't recommend a Moto Guzzi or Husky to just anyone & surely not before they know the ups & downs. I went into this deal with my eyes wide open just hoping for the best. So far so good. The bike really has no major recurring issues. Think of all the bikes that had major issues that needed to be sorted when new...soft cams, cam chain tensioners, cracking triple clamps, water pumps, broken gear shift return springs, gaskets, etc etc. EVERY bike has some issues & the more you know about any particular model the more potential issues you will find. So if the grass looks greener it may only appear that way from a distance.
By no means should you discount other small manufacturers due to Husky's lack of support. I own a Ural, probably the smallest motorcycle manufacturer out there, and I must say that their customer support is echelons above any company I've ever dealt with. So much so that they have even offered to mail me parts directly to fix a warranty issue, with no request to return the broken parts.
