  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

yeah you're right. You know what, I think once I get the kickstart plate welded and ready to go, and the tire bent back into place, I think i'm going to either sell it, or trade it for another bike. Hopefully ill make a few hundred on it at least. I'm not expecting to triple my money here. I wish I could have some fun with it but it's really old.... Not much can be done to it at this point. Had I had a brand new one it would be nice lol. But huskies are impossible to find here and for a nice newer husky it will cost a lot of money. It's a really cool bike but yeah you're right. The most you could probably ever really get for it at max is 2500$ IF it runs and performs without failure (Which it has until the kick plate crack was discovered, and the tire bent...). That's what I was quoted on. Ill put Or best offer on it. It had no title either so it makes matters worse actually. I appreciate the help guys!
 
where are you located?
youre probably right tho, no sense in owning an older husky like that one, they dont really run or handle very well. certainly not very good for having fun

I know lol. I heard they are making a strong comeback though. I am located in Melbourne, florida. Idk how much the bike is actually worth. If anyone here in florida would be interested I suppose they could shoot an offer. It does start easily though. If I could get my hands on their newer bikes i'd be going to town on them lol. I've seen some of them wreck and get back to running right after as if it was nothing. Same with KTM. Perhaps ill find something. This bike is meant more for someone who will restore it 100% and take it simple trail riding.

riding it around in the grass however, it did feel like an amazing bike. It certainly had a LOT of power to it. You could go crazy with it if there wasn't a risk of getting killed lol. It has pretty awesome suspension as well. But again it's vintage. It's days of hardcore motocross are over. By the way, when would you ever use a 500cc dirt bike? or where? I've seen the 250-300cc bike goes like 70mph. this isn't even a supermoto

i made the above comment "tongue firmly planted in cheek", as hoosks like yours arent really meant for the mx track but more for off road, enduro, woods, or desert..
im only 34, but have owned the particular bike in my avatar since age 17, when it was new in the crate. its my go to bike, and is super comfortable. well over 200 hours on the original top end, it is quite capable of "simple trail riding"and unless i encounter a better rider the bike keeps up with any year machine no problem... riding is more about the rider than bike sometimes, and that 88 250 has embarrassed its share of "new bike riders". make no mistake, any year of husqvarna bike represents a top level race machine from its year..
 
idk dude I don't know wtf I'm talking about! I've never done motocross in my life XD! I just got this sucker to play around with. They have a few tracks here I'm sure you could pull off some crazy stunts or whatever with. IF whatever I say sounds inaccurate it probably is! Lol. It probably is a badass bike I don't know I cant say I have never done anything but ride it around in hilly grass and dirt with occasional bumps that send you only 4 ft in the air max. I honestly don't know. I don't know how I got involved with this bike in the first place. Sure i'd love to ride it and have fun but I need something that can be dual sport as well or it has to be something that I know I wont have problems with like you said. That's why I am here, to find out more about the bike I own. To make sure I don't ruin it or mess anything up. My first time every riding a motorcycle. And it's fun. But it was meant as a small money maker project but I see clearly now that wont be the case unless I'm lucky

That carburetor will make a siphon if it falls over and the fuel keeps coming out, the solution is to tip it over the other way. It took a long time to figure that out. Mine starts great even after a couple of years but stall it 3 times when hot totally different. It is not a choke, a choke blocks off the air passage, the big one. It has a lever you lift up when cold on the side of the carb.

Fran k, I figured out all I had to do was pull the choke lever on and then back off to stop the fuel siphoning after a crash.
 
Okay so I talked to a ton of people and none of them know welding for aluminum/magnesium. So I'm gonna try the jb weld route... I sanded it and scratched the area for it to grab onto, mixed it up well and applied it. Hopefully all goes well. If all goes well, ill finish off and fix the front wheel, I think it's been bent, I just never noticed...
If I seem like I am doing it all wrong and ruining this innocent bike tell me lol. Also, I found two bearings that are missing for the kick start mechanism. I'm not sure how it's been working or how I've been using it without failure for this long with those two stick bearings but it has. Good thing I found it... lol.
ill update when everything I ordered to complete the bike comes in and I put it on. The hand guards I got are total junk and are completely useless, bolts stripped and it moves around so oh well

and yeah, no more problems with ignition anymore. it's easy to start no problem...
I'm actually surprised with the way the starting procedure is supposed to be

It's great you are doing this...us old ginks ALL learned just this way, and had few people to help or encourage us...you are getting yourself a great education, keep at it!

Is it done? Does it need anything else?
Carb adjustments and engine rebuilding have made it run pretty well, not hard to start, good for the track... No one is interested in it though lol. So i guess im stuck with it for a while. Lucky for me however i have found a kawasaki 2006 500r for 600$ in good condition. Cheap because of the need for new crank bearings but thats easy fix,,.
 
as for needing anything, hard to say we arent there but it certainly looks much better. definitely route the clutch cable correctly so it isnt getting snagged or melted. should go behind numberplate, along downtube, then to engine..
i think youll be happier running a dirtbike in the dirt and a streetbike on the street. i guess florida is flat, do you have woods and that type of terrain to ride much or is it just motocross?
 
I could ride it around in the woods, I could ride it all over the place the only fear I have is some officer catching me running a bike without a title. Some people told me they run theirs without titles and nobody cares so I guess it should be fine. It doesn't have headlight but I could hook one up. Even a battery powered light would work. It would be fun to ride all over the place since ill have a vehicle soon, but I have no way of transporting the bike lol. no truck.
 
your bike is not an mx model, so it has a lighting coil to run lights and used to have a kickstand...didnt know in florida you had to have a title..in most states you dont need one for bikes, just atvs
 
yeah it's a need, you need titles. I found out how to title it no problem actually just recently, cause the vin number is super clean. I got it on ebay piced 3400$ or best offer. I'm gonna really miss it. I can gurantee Ill be doing more husky stuff soon, it definitely is a big interest because of how cool these bikes are.
And yeah I'm aware it has coils for lights and I figured out wiring but I find nothing that will work on ebay. Cant find the orginal light switch. I've seen this bike be street legal actually on another forum. The kickstand is gone and I cant find a replacement
 
lights and kickstands are everywhere, but good luck on the sale. these bikes usually sell pretty cheap at times.. but i guess it can depend on location. bought a pretty nice 87 430 awhile back for 750 with no repainting done, no broken plastic
 
Ok so i havent sold it yet but asshole stupid people at dmv realized their info i wrong and i can title this bike no problem. If i make it a street bike, because there is no battery charger, could i steal power from the two wires that power the lights? I could charge thr battery that way and hook lights up to battery. Is this idea stupid or could it work? I could install key kill switch and turn signals and stuff like that. What do you think? Its the best bike ive ever been on and i love it. No one seems to want it so it doesnt matter.
 
One of the yellow wires will power your lights. You need to be sure to regulate the power or it will burn out bulbs when you rev up the motor.
 
Ill see, someone has offered to trade a dual sport for itit's a Kawasaki klr 250 from 2001 so I might do it. The guy is a husky enthusiast and I need something street legal. if no trade i Might just go ahead and try to make the husky a street bike. I saw one once, a 510 4 stroke. It wouldn't hurt to try. It's reliable. It'd be a sweet dual sport. I have no wiring diagrams so I really don't know how to get this going. I cant find original killswitch/lightswitch on ebay either
 
Now that you've had a taste of big bore power, I'd be interested to hear your impressions of the KLR250 after you ride it. Damn they are slow!

lol I know they are, I'm gonna try it and see how it rides. (Probably like crap) I got a buddy who knows KLR and I'm gonna have his opinion on it. The big bore husky is crazy fast going around 40mph just on second gear. (had speedometer on me). Crazy right?
Are they really that bad?

husky 510 Is the first and only motorcycle I've ever ridden. never ridden anything with two wheels prior to it
