• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Out and About (Terra, Strada)

Back to normal programming... I had to go to a funeral 430km away. I took the scenic route via farm roads. A long ride but very fast on wide and well maintained roads. Unfortunately the scenery is dull this time of year as its around seeding time. No wildlife this time so speed was high.

Hi Chuffa, nice pics. I miss that scenery, so special. How many km on your Terra now? Any issues so far?

Issues? Maybe kangaroos? Sorry, had to toss that in after reading thru your rebuild (and rehab) after the kangaroo incident a few years ago.

Cheers Scott, Kangaroo avoidance is at the top of my mind every time I ride these days. Just have to live with it. CarstenB, I've got 66k km with not many long rides in the last year. As mine got dusted early, it's using a bit of oil. It's a pretty steady amount but no drama. Cable loom needs regular checking if your off road. It's wearing in places & I've used silicone repair tape to strengthen some areas. I still love the bike.

Hmmm...maybe give a bottle of Morey's Oil Stabilizer a go....I wrote up a yarn a little while ago in another forum about the better half's oil-burning KLR (slowly increasing, too) after a mate recommended this stuff.
It's still got me baffled, but oil-consumption has dropped to zilch (from about 500ml/1000km).

Here's a copy of the original post

It's been going on for a good while.

Stop for lunch on a day ride and someone sidles up:
"You know, that Klacka...when ever Goodie's in front of me, I can smell the oil when she opens the taps out of a bend or so. That thing is throwing out some oil, mate..."

Yep, smelled it a few times myself and I wasn't even that close. No blue clouds... but no doubts either.
Getting home after a 350km Sunday and there's a distinct lack of the slick stuff in the show-glass...about 100-150ml.
If it was a HOT day which also involved some longer highway stretches there's 200ml missing.
Go for an overnighter in the High Country through summer and there's a half-liter needed.
It sort of comes to a running oilchange between oilchanges.W-)

A good portion of the 07/08/ vintages of that model KLR are known oil-burners.

Assuming one of those (though it's got too many miles on it to display those symptoms now, going by the usual reports), I started to look around for the obvious fixes.
Go from full-synth oils (Motul 5100 @ a cost-per-liter approaching the level of Baileys) to slightly thicker stuff (Motul 3100) to Dino-juice....no differences noted.

Started looking around for the cheapest way to assemble the required parts for a top+bottom job....keep an eye on Fowles/Pickles for a low-mileage crashed example I could scavenge the donk from for a transplant....

Talking with a mate in the trade, there were only 3 questions:
1) Any blue stuff from the exhaust?
NO
2) Any oil in the airbox?
NO... the tiniest bit of "sweat", but nothing I'd call "oil"!
3) Any funny noises from the engine?
NO

"Get a bottle of this stuff and follow the instructions!"

Bollox!! Bloody Snakeoil!

Surely, that $20/litre Motul has got all and any "additives" in it anyone has ever dreamed up, right? W-)

Arghhh...what the hell, it's just another $20 flying out the exhaust... and if it turns the oil to concrete it doesn't really matter, the clanger's bloody rooted anyway, right?
The 42.000k service came along, 350ml of Moreys went straight into the sump, then topped up with the usual Penrite.
650km later the burned-oil-stink has nearly disappeared, the show-glass is still full to the brim, I haven't added a drop and the old 1litre emergency bottle has been fished out of the topbox and relegated to the bench again.

It's still SnakeOil to me....but shit, it WORKS!

Thanks for posting. It was a great ride! Now that I've recovered, next time on Schofield Pass, the TE310R, with LOW tire pressure! Oh, and "I" could lose 20 pounds and spend the year before working out!!

Ya, but I could only see you benefiting on the TE310 for about 2% of the ride and regretting taking it for the other 98% of the time. The TE630 was perfect for 98% of the ride and a bit of a hand full on only 2%. I think you brought the perfect bike for the ride! Here you are now, right in front, just after surviving one of those 2% sections.

Finally found some time to take the Terra on a proper belated maiden voyage. Slabbed 500mls from Houston to Big Bend NP where i will spend a few days and try to hit as much dirt as possible. Love the bike!image.jpg

Quite impressed how well she handles the dirt roads and at the same time doesnt mind to do days of 70-80mph on the highway. Smooth, 50-70mpg and dead reliable since the recall.

Back home now. Stayed one day longer than planned in Big Bend and had to ride the 600 miles back home in one day. Terra did it just fine and my bum is not too sore.

Awesome part of Tassie, innit?
Hope you made it across to Mt. Barrow, the crosscut to Ringarooma via Mt. Victoria Plains and Ralph's Falls, Mt. William National Park and those blinding white beaches around Musselroe Bay and Petal Point.
Just booked the boat last week for another 2 weeks in March, tenting around some more of the North of the island. Can't wait :-)
Enjoy !!
